Hi, I wonder if anyone could tell if our text messages are being saved somewhere on their systems or are they being deleted after a period.

Beginning here is probably the best idea.

Relevant text:

"Complying with legal, governmental or regulatory agencies’ requests in connection with the regulation of telecommunications services, and in connection with any legal proceedings, crime or fraud prevention or detection, or prosecution;..."

The next step would be to investigate the legislation 2degrees has to operate under.

They are stored for about 5 years.

Who advised you that? The CDR records maybe stored for that long but content of the SMS I doubt it,

Fear not, they'll be safely stored away on a large server farm somewhere in Utah...you'll probably be able to Google the content in 15 years time

Can someone "Google" the TXT messages?! its horrible if its available on that server for every one. I suppose the server would ask you for your SIM PIN code or something before allowing access.

Yes carriers around the world pass this data over to Google plain text so everyone can have a good read of what everyone is up to! <<-- Please note this is a joke

No this data is encrypted, I know cause I work on it and Google would never see it

I would imagine in one of their billing system databases... but just the basic text details - sender, receiver, time, length.

Just like all of your calling information but not your actual recorded call.

Why's that? What have you done? We won't tell anyone... ;)

not that i've done anything illegal or plan to do so, its just that its private information about us and our friends and we'd like total transparency please and thank you :P

In which case you should be contacting the people who enforced the requirements on carriers and if necessary making OIA because carriers involved in any storage or interception are doing this under requirements of the law. The simple reality is no carrier is likely to answer any questions regarding either.

It'll take you 5 seconds with Google to find exactly who was behind this in New Zealand because it was relatively big news when lobbied for.

The content of all text messages is stored on the SMSC for 6 months. This is a policy decision that 2degrees have made.
