In regards to the ADSL plans:

 

Is the unlimited one a different pool to the unlimited plan?

 

How do both stack up for usability during peak traffic hours in Hamilton?

 

Would we be able to have one person game and another stream a video comfortably?

 

How about streaming 2 videos at 720p off youtube?

 

Does it often have outages?

 


Currently on a 500gb plan with telecom but the cap is too small and expensive compared to other ISP's. We are outside the ufb/fibre catchment areas.
We have 1 heavy facebook user, 1 who constantly streams twitch and 1 who dabbles in youtube and online gaming
We made the mistake of joining the old unleashed (unusable) plan back when it launched and are looking to avoid a situation like that again (couldn't use internet during school holidays and weekends due to limited pool size)
Sorry for asking so many questions. Just looking for as much information before I lock us into a 12 month death sentence and wish to be as informed as possible.
Most of the information I can find is 6 months old and I know all the ISP's have upped their game since then so looking for a fair indication of their current performance.

So please, share your experiences with either of these plans.

I was on an SS ADSL all you can eat plan for about a year before I switched to VDSL when it became available. The plan was shared between two heavy users, one for gaming and one for media streaming. The ADSL was about 13Mbps down and .9Mbps up and we had no problems even going up to several hundred gigabytes of traffic per month. We have only used the provided modems.

If there was throttling, it wasn't noticable or obvious. I think YouTube is provided by third parties or content delivery providers, so the popular content plays fine, even at very high resolution, while the obscure titles struggle a bit - let's put it this way: I have a better expereince on the web than any of my peers.

We are 600m from the cabinet and have been told in the past by other providers and techs that the cable is in a bad way (unavoidably high noise due to bad joins, age etc.).

My expereince with Slingshot has been that their systems are out of date and poor people processes, but once the installation pain is over, it's plain sailing. To justify this - calling for support or installation updates was a very stressful expereince and I would often receive email notifications that were incorrect and misleading then get told to ignore all messges as they are "usually wrong and automatic" etc. I have had several run ins with their accounts departments for over charging but this seems to start at plan renewals and takes a few phone calls to contain, so it seems to be an automated system that is problematic and some 'button pressing' staff, certainly, it's not global and as with anything, YOU need to check YOUR bill.

At the price and performance, the installation is worth it and I have renewed my contract more than once.

VDSL made a big difference to me only as I upload a lot of content and this was the only reason to switch otherwise the VDSL download performance was a marginal improvement on ADSL.

Slingshot has an opt-in proxy service in the 'States so you can see services like NetFlix and some geographically restricted YouTube content. This service is free and does not seem to limit or impede any performance.

In summary - difficult install, average support (hit and miss really) but once the product is in, works fine and worth the money.

Good luck, please remember that experiences vary with this kind of product based on factors that are sometimes out of the control of you and the ISP.

At this point in time, I would renew my contract when it expires and I have been through a lot of NZ ISPs.
