I successfully upgraded the firmware from 5.51 to 6.01, but because SMB functionality is disabled in the new version I want to downgrade back to 5.51. I have been blocked from doing so and according to AVM it may be because the ISP's settings have disabled downgrading (see below).

Does Snap! have a solution for this? I began a thread for this which has since been moved to different forum. I re-post here because it is a Snap! specific and not general hardware issue.

Pinkfish: Unfortunately, 6.01 won't let you run any downgrade firmware - likely something to do with the major version of the firmware being different.  The best option is to download the 05.51 recovery image from ftp://ftp.avm.de/fritz.box/fritzbox.fon_wlan_7390/x_misc/english/.

As this is an exe, you'll need to be running windows for it to work.  If you want 5.22, you should be able to run the downgrade firmware after recovering the fritz.

Is there a risk this could interfere with, or even remove, the Snap! settings and give me other problems?

all snaps settings can be reconfigured.

if all else fails, you can ring snap, they will step you through atlest getting the modem online, from there they can resetup your VoIP etc.

Thank you very much for the enquiry you submitted to AVM Support.

We are unaware of problems concerning the downgrade.

Did you get your FRITZ!Box from your internet service provider or did you

buy it in a store? Maybe your ISP uses specific provider settings in the

FRITZ!Box that prevent it from downgrading? You could enquire this at your

ISP.

Wow, I upgraded to 6.01 a week or so ago and hadn't noticed that SMB access to the NAS has been removed until now. What on earth are they thinking? What good is a NAS without any means of accessing it? The web view seems to be the only way now but that is not acceptable. Have contact AVM to voice my disgust.

i voiced my disgust for where AVM were going a few months ago, with their firmware removing error counters. also voiced this to snap, who put me onto the beta for it.

unfortunately, it would seem foresight for that fell on death ears.

you will need to flash it rather than downgrade by the sounds of things (which is what the recovery is doing essentially.)

Sooo... They say they can configure it if you boob settings. But do they support the online direct from AVM firmware upgrade? Nothing in FAQ or similar.

snap themselves can direct you through a firmware downgrade, they encourage it on vdsl (not sure why they dont distribute with the 5.22 firmware still...)

ild say its something in your firmware downgrade process that went wrong..

I've not moved of 5.51 ;) I mean in general. Since there is a new update, there appears to be no word if we should or shouldn't be performing them

Great news. Had a reply from AVM via Facebook:

"Hello Steve, Sorry about that. We are already working on an update to enable Samba (SMB) with FRITZ!OS 6.01 and the FRITZ!Box 7390. In the meantime, you can use FTP or the FRITZ!NAS interface. If you need any support, please contact our support team. Thank you!"

I wonder how long this will take though? Is it worth holding one's breath?

Email from Snap:

Afternoon,

Unfortunately due to the way that your Fritz box was configured, it prevents downgrades from occurring after upgrading to the 6.01 firmware. I've included a link to a beta firmware version below that you could try to see if it restores SMB functionality or at the very least I believe that it should allow you to downgrade to the 5.51 version.

Well, it does restore SMB functionality - I will report any problems.
Have not tried to downgrade.

im not quite sure, snap intended to hand beta firmwares out so publicly..

but nice to know AVM care about SMB.. now if only they would fix my grumbles, be it for a technical minded person.

I just installed AVM official 6.03 which showed up as an update this morning. No sign of SMB NAS access returning though. Not sure if I want to be running any beta's on the fritzbox just to get SMB back.

I do occasionally use the NAS attached to the the fritz but find it to be VERY slow reading and writing. I have a 2TB WD MyBookLive attached to the gig switch which performs MUCH better.

Also the fritzbox won't take mac formatted drives for the NAS.
