Hi all

I have been a Snap customer for a couple of years now. I moved to VDSL in August last year.

When it was first installed, the Chorus engineer installed an incorrect splitter at the DMark, and I was getting rubbish speeds, but all was fixed again after a week after a new technician came and fixed it all up.

At that time, I was getting 39meg down and 10 meg down. Speeds and the quality of connection was great.

There was an outage 6 weeks ago, when I called Snap they didn't know what the issue was, but said they would lodge a request with Chorus.

Connectivity came back by the evening. But when the modem synced, my download speed had changed to 29meg down but still 10meg up. I called Snap to ask why, they did a line test that took a day and when I called back they told me a peice of equipment had been changed in the cabinet. When I queried the speed test I was told that because the speed was above minimum specs, nothing else could be done.

5 weeks later and I notice my speed going slower again, and now find my download speed at 24.5 meg down and 10.meg up. Called Snap who did a 24 hour test and when I rang back, was told no issue with the line, so I could request a tech to come out but if there was no fault a fee would apply.

I'm feeling as no one is listening here. There is an issue. How could my download speeds have dropped so much? I almost now have half the speed I had when I originally signed up and the equipment at the exchange has changed but something is very wrong. I have a jack connection straight from the DMark point to the room.

I'm disappointed at Snap for not seeing the bigger picture, and for Chorus ignoring the issue. Customers are obviously nor important, I just want the service I had. This is rediculous and I can't change my service as I'm still under contract until August 2015.

Thanks for reading, hope to hear from some one soon, ignorance is not bliss...

Bash

Hi there Bash, I'm not really a regular poster here but I would like to ask for some stats from your fritz box or whatever VDSL router you are using, as it will help the other geekzone members determine what might be wrong with your line.

Have you looked at the VDSL thread on the Snap subforum which tells you a lot about DLM profiles and other useful information. Its over here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=90&topicid=105744

what i suspect has happened, is the type of linecard on your line has been switched out, and caused issues.

it is also likely that because you seem to have had a fault, which required fixing, chorus may have done something with your pairs, replaced part of it with another or something - the effect this has, is you could now run along side another VDSL customer, whos line maybe isnt perfect and is outputting a bit more than "normal" crosstalk.

please post stats, spectrum would be great too. and if you have previous screenshots, they would be even more useful for a comparison.

Once a physical wiring issue has been ruled out, this is the most likely cause of gradual degredation over time - crosstalk or interference from other pairs in the same MPF. It happens with both ADSL and VDSL - the more users in a given area, the more background noise the system has to overcome, which means a lower sync rate.

Early adopters of VDSL wouldn't have had much competition at upper ends of the spectrum, but as more users sign up with the recent pushes from the larger RSPs, the noise level goes up, and sync rates drop.

Crosstalk on VDSL2 is becoming a real world issue.

Hi Guys

Sure - here is some info

As for downstream speeds - 39 down 10 up - August 2013 - 29 meg down 10 up March 2014 - 24.5 meg down 10 up now!

I am seriously feeling bullied by the telco and Chorus to accept a standard that I believe is sub standard - given my original speeds. Its obvious something is very wrong. And if cross talk is an issue - should this not have been addressed?? My immediate concern is the equipment now in the cabinet where I am is failing - a drop of 15 meg down is quite alot.

My wiring has not changed in our house - which is just 10 years old and is totally cat 5 and 6 enabled.

Are they controlling bandwidth usage at the switch?? Snap's claim to fame is allowing speeds as fast as the line can handle - which leads me to believe something is up with Chorus' end - or we are not being told the truth.

Solutions are better than excuses. All I want is the service to be back where it was when I signed up - is that seriously so difficult.

Thanks - Bash

what sort of linecard are you on? it shows on the overall tab.

what OS are you running on your fritz? it looks to me like 5.51? which fritz do you have?

first thing i note, is distance is clearly a limiting factor for you but it isnt tappering as aggressively as normal.

looks like your lower end spectrum is where the bulk of your speed would come from, has a sizeable amount of crosstalk or something pushing it down. - this is something i personally have experienced on my own line although thats purely a observation, and im yet to find any reason to confirm my observations there.

while you can wiggle around and moan about it, you might simply be stuck with the drop in speed, see if we cant squeeze a few improvement onto your fritz.. but i suspect your never going to get that 39 back without an fair bit of tinkering.

ill also add, for a 16dB line, your 39 mbit sync was a very impressive rate, so the drop in speed is not surprising to be honest.

history of my current line..

first installed, was getting 55/10 on 8b. had things fixed up, and a few resets. ended up maxing out at about 40/10 on 8b - quite a drop there!

moved onto 17a, got about 50/10 (17a runs on a lower power level, so a drop in 8b spec speeds is expected for the most part.) and have since tuned that up to 60/10 with more headroom to bump it when i see fit.

what this does go to show though, is when DLM reassessed things, my line did take a sizeable dump, and im almost certain crosstalk was to blame for this, given the unpeckable timing of a certain door knocker..

Good. At this point, Ild recommend dropping down to 5.22 that should help a little.

There is no fix for FEXT (well vectoring can, but that's not going to happen).

Your attenuation is pretty high so your speeds are about right for your attenuation.

Vectoring will never work due to the comcoms idea to unbundle the exchanges in NZ

24/10mb? Wish my line synced that fast. Fastest it has ever synced was 22.5/5.2mb and it's currently at 19.5/3.3mb.

I wonder how much of that is caused by people tweaking their line settings with the fritz. Or having poor house wiring which caused the modems to transmit at a higher power output than otherwise needed.

I'm guessing people with just have to deal with it until fibre comes past their door, as forcing people to get wiring done might get tricky for those with a 'working' setup.
