Hi,

I'm experiencing high latency when playing counter strike on steam Australian servers in the afternoon. New Zealand servers I'm getting around 20-40 where Australian servers are around 120. I have tried calling Orcon but all they tell me to do is change my WIFI channel. Is this a common problem with no fix or is there something I can do to make online gaming playable??

I have the same problem here, been going on at least a week. Seems to be a problem only in the evenings. On orcon vdsl in wellington, here is a winMTR to on.net.

Any testing done over WIFI is irrelevant, always use wired connections for testing (or for gaming.)

2.4ghz WIFI is massively congested in most areas during peak times, so yeah if you're trying to pay a game like CS / COD / BF where ping is king, you're always going to suffer. Switch to hard wired ethernet.

If you have a massive lag spike even on a hardwired connection, then you can start nagging Orcon to do something about it, but it may not always be something they can control (Chorus congestion, Conklin's, etc).. I'm sure someone really knowledgeable like John or Steve will be along to say this and more soon thou :-)

Getting the same issues in CS:GO.

Playing on an NZ based server I get no issues, ping settles around ~45ms and fluctuates depending on bandwidth on my local network.
If I leave that NZ server and join a casual server my ping immediately jumps to around 160-200ms.

The game is pretty unplayable.
Kinda sad that a local ISP can't even support gaming over the ditch, really wish I had the power to change my ISP but sadly that's not within my power.

I'm on 30/10 Fibre in central Auckland.

Had to laugh at this trace route comparison I just did.

The top trace is to an NZ server I was playing on 10 mins prior to this test.
The bottom trace is to an Aus server in Sydney. Based on what I'm seeing the routing hits the US several times, then the UK...

The ping tests are opposite, bottom is NZ, top is Aus

Yeah, safe to say something is up tonight, but looks like it might be out of Orcon's control judging by the latency spike once the traffic hits AU.

Yep still have not found a solution since creating this thread.

Using wired connection now , reinstalled steam, no change still always getting 120+ to anything but NZ servers.

Have talked to the Orcon technical team aswell and they just suggest going to linespeed.nz and reporting daily results........

I'm starting to think I just have to switch provider?

WTF Orcon?

Looks to me like the services are actually in London. There is no direct cable between NZ and London (or AU and London). So very unlikley a AU service will be routed via London.

Last night Apple released OSX11.1. This for some reason was served over our Apple peering in Sydney rather than our CDN nodes in Auckland. This has a bit of an impact to AU traffic.
