Hi there,

I'm considering switching over our unlimited VDSL from VF to the deal 2Degrees have on right now but want to know if anyone has had any success getting the Fritzbox 7490 set up to access the overseas Netflix catalogues? I'm currently using DNS4ME but having very limited success accessing the USA catalogue on our Samsung Smart TV ("using an unblocker" message) or on an AppleTV 2 ("problem loading this content" message) although Macbook Pro and samsung tablet work fine.

I can get Admin level access on the VF supplied Huawei modem router and have applied static routes etc but that's about where my technical proficiency runs out. I had been considering ditching the Huawei and buying a 3rd party modem / router that has been demonstrated to work well with the whole Netflix issue (recommendations anyone, bearing my technical limitations in mind?) before the 2Degrees offer came up. Obviously I don't want to spend a couple of hundred busks on a new router if the Fritzbox one will work.

Any help / suggestions much appreciated.

I have no issues for basic DNS redirects. You just enter the DNS servers you want in the config screen and you are good to go.

You can't redirect out-going DNS requests (via port 53) - that requires a different router that the fritzbox (I don't recall what ones work - but am pretty sure no ISP supplied Modem will do this)

It works fine. In addition to using the DNS you have to create null routes to Google and OpenDNS servers.

I'm using Unotelly with the Fritzbox, basic config (DNS redirect) only. Works generally OK as long as you don't region hop too much. Some general flakiness since they started cracking down.

You can't redirect port 53 or anything fancy, but you can blackhole troublesome DNS servers like Google OK.

I have 7490, unotelly, and my netflix clients include apple tv/pc/ps4/ios.

It all works just fine, has been stable for a while now.

With one issue only though -- the apple tv interface is so slow as to be unusable. eg, last night it took around 10 minutes to get a tv show playing on my atv3. I get spinning circle while pages load and especially when i try to play a show.

My theory is that the atv netflix client is trying to contact all these external servers which I have blocked. The timeout/retry period must be set quite high. Just a theory. Anyone have the same issue? (It happens on both my atv2 and atv3 although seems worse on the 3).

Im on 2 degrees with a 7490 and also use dns4me. I have no problems using the service. I use redirects too.

BTW @surfisup1000 I also see those delays on certain devices.

Many thanks for all of that, sounds like it's entirely do-able.

@surfisup1000 I have found a few forum threads that suggest restarting or refreshing the ATV clears the problem, although it hasn't worked for me.. DNS4ME apparently have a new USA server with more capacity which has improved response times so that is the next thing for me to try...

OK I finally got switched over to 2D and we seem to be up and running. I'm not sure if I need to add the static routes that DNS4Me suggest or a simple DNS redirect will do it? If I try to add a static route on the Fritzbox router admin page it asks for a gateway (4 fields, same as IPv4 network and Subnet Mask) - anyone any ideas?

Also is anyone able to point me in the right direction for 'black-holing' the Google DNS please?

For gateway on Fritz use your local network address with a 2 at the end (eg 192.168.178.2, with .1 being your router). GetFlix's instructions are pretty good for Fritz!Box.

I suggest you flick @michaelmurfy a PM and see if he will add you to the private forum discussing these sorts of things rather than discussing it in a public thread.
