Hi all

I have Orcon Genius ADSL at my place and for a very long time (since before Global mode was switched off) I haven't been able to get reliable connectivity to Netflix (app) or Gmail (via mail or outlook app) on any Android devices over my wifi connection.

With Netflix, the app doesn't get past the launch screen - eventually I get a connection timeout error. With gmail, I get a connection timeout notification whenever I try to sync.

I still get emails occasionally, but syncing on demand doesn't work.

Laptop wifi to the web versions works no problem. Same apps work on friends or work wifi no problem. No problems with other apps using google account - just mail.

The problem goes away if I turn off wifi and access via mobile internet. I can stream netflix to chromecast only by switching to 3/4G, finding the content I want to stream, switching to wifi, connecting to the chromecast and then playing the content.

I thought it might be a DNS issue but changing my routers DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4 doesn't help.

It's been driving me insane, and I'm hoping someone might have come across this before.

Thanks

-Graham

*update pinging www.netflix.com from my laptop over wifi gets a time out error. But I can still access the site on my browser.

Have you used the default Orcon DNS settings, Preferred DNS Server: 121.98.0.1
Alternate DNS Server: 121.98.0.2

Hi

yes, up until today I had the box ticked in my router settings to "let my ISP decide". It was only because I'm clutching at straws I tried the Google DNS servers.

For the sake of eliminating the possibility, I've just tried setting them to these manually, to no avail.

It might not be DNS of course - I really have no idea why the problem is restricted to Android apps over this particular connection.

Problem exists on my HTC M7, my partners old Samsung S4, her current Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 and I think the netflix problem also occurred on her old iphone 4S as well...

I believe Netflix was adding a feature where android users could select their quality of videos to reduce bandwidth consumption.
It may be related.

NOTE: You can't ping www.netflix.com or www.netflix.co.nz they seem to have blocked IMCP Ping replays.

Netflix.com replies over v6. Pings timing out doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem though.
