Hey All,

Just want to get some advice/opinions on this.

I recently moved from Spark ADSL2 to 2Degrees VDSL and have been overall happy with the transition. Since going onto VDSL, my DSL sync rates increased from approx. 17mb to 26mb (downstream) so am happy enough with the improvement. My upstream sync rates however, hasn't increased much at all. I'm currently getting approx 1mb which is basically what I was getting on ADSL2.

I called 2Degrees, spoke to a few reps, who logged a fault and raised a ticket with Chorus. Apparently, given I'm the only person with VDSL in my neighborhood, I was advised this is all I could expect to achieve. One of the reps mentioned, this has something to do with me being the only person with VDSL in my neighborhood, and my profile can't be changed? To be honest, I wasn't entirely sure what the rep meant by this.

Is this something I should follow up, or just accept? At the end of the day, an increase in my upstream speed isn't going to make a world of a difference, but I guess I was expecting some increase to my upstream when going onto VDSL.

CPE wise, I'm using the Fritzbox 7490 with an ADSL splitter (not regular filter) installed.

Below are my DSL stats if that helps.

you need to be using a VDSL splitter not an ADSL one.

your image link has not worked, the spectrum page from the fritzbox would help too.

Ok right, I've never heard of an VDSL splitter. The splitter I currently have installed, I believe was done at the demarc (entry point) at my house, and wired specifically at one jackpoint, so I'm not using the standard/regular ADSL filters per say. Are you able to provide me a link with of what VDSL splitter I should be using.

As for the pics, I'll try this again. Hopefully this works now.

vdsl runs at higher frequencies to ADSL so the splitters are different. If you have an ADSL one it would be worth swapping it out for a VDSL one and see if that makes much of a difference.

Its worth a shot and you really dont have much to loose from it.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies. Sorry I'm still a little confused here. The VDSL filter you are suggesting, can these be purchased at a store or does this require a tech to install it? When I was connected to VDSL, no technician physically came to my house.

Just to clarify, the filter I have installed isn't a generic filter that you plug into a jackpoint. When I first had ADSL installed (about 7 years ago), a Chorus tech came into my house a installed a splitter at the demarc, so I only have one physical jackpoint (labelled "ADSL") that I can plug my router in. I was advised by 2Degrees this was all o needed?

Am I on the right track here, or am I missing the point entirely lol.

you can install it yourself if you have the skills, the current one may be VDSL capable but it would be best to check as they did change a few years ago from ADSL only ones to XDSL ones.

Ah, seeing your spectrum along with your line stats make so much more sense.

What you look to be suffering from is actually the fact that your line is rather long. In your case, i personally would stay on VDSL not roll back. Downstream boost, minor upstream plus PTM rather than ATM would all add up nicely.

The splitter you have installed may be a VDSL one already since its a master filter.

Take a photo of it would be the best way to check, Generally the ADSL ones are two pair and the VDSL ones offer 3 pairs (the third being a dedicated run right out to your DSL jackpoint)

Hey,

Thanks for the advice, sounds like I'm getting somewhere. Ok so I've taken a pic, apologies it was a little tight and I didn't pull it out in case I accidentally ripped some of the wires out, plus it was a little dark. If this picture isn't any good, I can always try again, and maybe in the daytime.

you need to get the product code and numbers off it as the wiring it covering it, + if you zoom your photo in its all blurry :)

It's an old Marque Magnetics MM3200-B that's only ADSL2+ rated up to 2.2MHz. You should replace this with a new MM-3400A which is VDSL2 rated up to 30MHz

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the advice. To be honest, I don't think I'm skilled enough to do this myself, I'm a little concerned I'll end up stuffing this up but might need a tech to do this.

Is this something that's covered under the 2Degrees contract? The only reason I ask is before deciding to go to 2Degrees I was considering staying with Spark, and I believe as part of provisioning VDSL (for Spark) it stated a tech would be required to install a splitter. I assumed this would've been the same process for 2Degrees.

I guess my question is, should I have expected a tech to attend when I originally had VDSL installed?

Several ISP's no longer include master filter installation with VDSL2 due to the cost - they can save money on the monthly fee they pay Chorus if they don't get one installed.

If you don't have anything else on the line, and its naked you can bypass the filter. But you should fit a VDSL one. There could be any number of reasons why there is noise on the line. Mainly poor internal wiring.

We can arrange for a technician to come and install a VDSL splitter for you through our wholesaler, however this does cost $199 and includes the installation of a new dedicated jackpoint. Our standard VDSL connections do not include this at the present time.

You can certainly arrange to get this switched out privately if you wanted to, often that would end up cheaper.

Ralph given he already has VDSL, already has a dedicated jackpoint all he needs is the old ADSL filter changed to a VDSL one there is no way you should be changing him $199 for that. its a $30 filter and looking at the pic about 10mins work at most.
