My friend is currently overseas (Dubai) and he has lost his phone, you can imagine how annoying that can be with apps such as whatsapp and viber relying on the phone number.

I am going to Dubai next week and he has asked me if it is possible to get him a new sim with his old number on it. I am wondering what security questions does 2degrees go through to allow this process to happen? And would I be better off pretending to be him or just being honest and hope for them to understand the situation and give me the number so that I can deliver it to him when I see him next week.

I would appreciate the advice of anyone who has gone through a similar experience and what questions did they ask you to verify it.

I would assume you can just buy a standard 2 degrees sim and bring to your friend, he can call the contact center to transfer the old number to the new sim card.

As your friend is the "account holder" he should contact 2degrees to arrange for the new SIM card to be issued, not you. He could then discuss with them the possiblity of you picking it up to deliver to him.

This is correct!

Before that get your friend to login to Your 2degrees - https://secure.2degreesmobile.co.nz/web/ip/login and suspend the account to avoid someone using his SIM or call us on +64 22 200 2000 so we can make sure the account is suspended. Otherwise get him to PM us here or email us here - Contact us - with his number and 4 digit PIN for authentication.

Get your friend a blank SIM to take to him and we can move his number over to it. You can order one online here or pick one up in a 2degrees store, Harvey Normans or Warehouse Stationery.
