I had fibre connected to my house today. Slingshot is my ISP and I have a homeline with them too. I have been using a Fritz 7490 and from the research I had done I thought I could get to work over fibre to Slingshot. Specifically I had read this thread:

https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=81&topicid=21388

I got the internet connection to work, though that post hadn't indicated to me to select a VID of 10.

However I couldn't get the phone to work and SIP registration never succeeded. Then I found this thread:

https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=81&topicid=226275

which seemed to indicate that the Fritz configuration I had copied no longer works. It's as if the Slingshot SIP registrar had changed.

I phoned Slingshot support and was told that there was no way I would ever get my Fritz to work for a homeline and my only choice was to have them send me one of the routers they supply. From what I have heard they are not the greatest routers, which is why I am trying to use the Fritz.

Does anyone know if this is the truth? If I should be able to get my Fritz working what should I be using as the SIP registrar address? Have other things changed from the setup described here:

https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=81&topicid=21388

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Hi Dave,

We use the NF18 modems for Fibre services. If you are still wanting to use the Fritzbox that's totally doable, and we can send you the settings. The homeline service will be mapped to our of our modems so we will still need to supply that to you. If you want me ot set that up jsut send through a message with your account details.

Ask them for the settings so you can configure your router rather than be locked in to their router and their contract, if the won't supply the information then port your number to 2talk, heaps of free features for a very reasonable price.

I try hard to avoid getting new electronic devices when what I currently have will do the job very well, that's mainly why I didn't go for the Slingshot supplied modem in the first place. The amount of e-waste we generate each year is nuts, so I really don't want to get another modem just to support the homeline. Another user reported being forced to get the Slingshot modem in order to get the homeline working, but then replaced it with the Fritz box with no problems.

I have thought of porting my number to 2talk, but the stories of having the internet service associated with that number automatically cut off when the number is ported away made me wary of doing this. Also I don't really want to have to deal with another provider for a legacy service that probably has a limited lifetime, but it might come to that.

Thanks for the advice.

Dave
