Hi all, I would like to switch from 2degrees to Orcon (fibre), but I am unsure whether the home phone will work due to my house network setup.

My fibre point is at the garage and currently I have a fritzbox 7490 in the garage. I then have another Fritzbox in the living room, connected to the fritzbox in thr garage via ethernet. it is the living room's fritzbox that is connected to a phone.

Now my concern is if I switch to Orcon, and thet provide a modem router to me. Is it difficult / possible to configure the routers so that the phone will work?

What is the function of the Fritzbox in the garage? Can you just skip it? Put the Orcon router in the lounge, and plug it directly into the fibre in the garage?

The fibre cable connects to the fritzbox in the garage. The fritzbox then has several LAN connections to the other parts of the house. The fritzbox in the living area is one of the LAN that connecta to a phone.

Are you sure the fibre connects directly to the garage Fritzbox?

This would be highly unusual. Fibre normally terminates to a little white box called an ONT. This converts the optical fibre signal to Ethernet, which then goes to the (first) router. The router and ONT do not need to be next to each other and can be as far apart as your Ethernet cable can reach/allows. Hence the above suggestion that you locate the (future) Orcon router in the house, where the location of the phone is preferable and were you say you already have a Ethernet cable installed.

The description is my current setup. It is working fine. Unfortunately, the house ethernet cables all run to the garage. It is therefore easier to have the router to be located in the garage, connecting the fibre / ONT box so that all LAN cables are then connected to the patch panel leading to other parts of the house. If it is like what has been suggested, having the fibre signal connected at the living area, the other parts of the house wont be able to access the LAN from the living area.

You would normally have a location in the house with (at least) two Ethernet outlets. A very 'normal' setup would be like this:

Garage (ONT, patch panel).

Ethernet from ONT to Lounge Ethernet port 1 (for example).

Router in lounge, WAN connected to Ethernet 1.

LAN from router connected to Ethernet 2 (for example). Gigabit switch in garage with a patch cable from Ethernet 2 to the switch, then as many patch cables as you need to liven up the other ports you want to use.

If your ISP terminates voice to the ONT, this can be patched through to any of the Ethernet ports. if you ISP uses the router, then you plug your main phone base unit into the router and away you go.

Is the Fritz in the lounge actually being used as a router though?, i.e., is it connected via its WAN interface. My guess is that you are using it only as a switch.

Put the Orcon router in garage. Patch phone port from Orcon router through your patch panel to a socket in the house somewhere to plug your phone into.

Hi the above replies are all correct. Unfortunately, there is only one port on the wall in the living area. So if i bring the router from the garage to the living area, there is no existing ethernet cable available to feed it back to the garage for other LAN purposes. This is why I just put a router in the garage and feed all LAN ports of the fritzbox to the patch panel.

Hi CoffeeBaron, that is a possible option as long as thr ports are compatible? RJ45 vs RJ11? I dont know what modem router Orcon gives out
