I got an email form Orcon about 2 weeks ago saying they are rolling out new services and they will send me "something special".

We've got something special for you...
Hi "****",
We're about to launch a very exciting new service in your neighbourhood and we want to send you a special delivery - the only thing is that we need to confirm your physical address.
Our records show that your address is:
*** ********** Street
Mount ******
Auckland *******
We're not 100% sure that these details are correct so if you do confirm they are correct, or update them before 14th July 2008 we'll put you in to the draw to win one of 20 Microsoft VX-1000 Lifecams.

No idea, but I'll take a guess and say it's gonna be one of those 2 for 1 movie cards valid for a year for Skycity Cinemas, just like the one I got when I signed up for ADSL2.

That is my guess too, I was able to get ADSL2+ connections from end of May, so I guess it is now the time for Telecom to open up my local exchanges...

No idea, but I'll take a guess and say it's gonna be one of those 2 for 1 movie cards valid for a year for Skycity Cinemas, just like the one I got when I signed up for ADSL2.

If that is the case... I'll classify it as "something not too special".

Received a similar letter from Orcon but it was stating that I'll be "upgraded" to adsl2+ (which I'm already on) it didnt really give me a choice if I wanted to switch or not. Plus I'll be going from $79.95 a month to $109.95.

Might just have to cough up the $99 joining fee and switch to Vodafone.

Hi Lurch,

You must have been one of our customers that signed up on our "one year free homeline" promotion that we ran last year.

Customers that signed up on this plan and are now in an unbundled area are being automatically upgraded to our Orcon+ network, which does include ADSL2+ broadband, as well as some other phone features that you don't currently get (call waiting, caller ID, voicemail). All of this is at the same fee you are paying currently ($79.95).

There is a second part to thtat letter, that is that the free homeline promotion expires on the 23rd of September (which actually means that all the customers who took up that offer get more than 1 year of a free homeline). From then you will need to pay for your homeline (hence the extra $30 charge) - although you are welcome to change to one of our other plans if they are better suited to your needs (e.g. the new Silver+ which is still $79.95).

I hope this clarifies things.

Correct I'm on that free homeline plan, Is there away to just drop the toll package part? I've been looking around and can get the homeline + 20GB FS/FS for $90 a month. I dont really need caller ID/Voicemail either.

Also if I'm switched over to the unbundled service does that cause issues if I want to switch to another ISP?

If I stick with Orcon it works out around $20 more a month than what other providers are offering. There's no way I want to pay over a $100 a month.

The silver+ plan that you mentioned (and also in the letter) is only 5GB a month which is of no use to me, I guess I have no other option but to switch to that until I move over to another ISP.

I got that letter months ago, I never signed up on the free line deal, I'm pretty sure I even got that letter before I signed up on the Orcon + network, never was sure what they were referring to?? i guessed it was the ADSL2 in the area?? It asked me to confirm my address.

If I recall correctly I recieved the same email prior to llu (ADSL2) occuring on my exchange, and then later recieved a fancy envelope including an invitation to change onto one of the new plans.

That is correct. On our unbundled plans there are a variety of data packs you can add on:

$20 for 25GB
$40 for 50GB
$60 for 100GB

Or, it will be charged at $1 per GB for any casual usage over your monthly allowance.

The letter that you guys got, and the one that Lurch has recieved are slightly different.

We have sent all of our existing customers in unbundled areas an invitation to be the first to join the new network.

We have now decided to automatically migrate those customers that signed up on our free homeline promotion (and who have not yet opted in to moving) onto the Orcon+ unbundled network.

That would still workout more. Plus I dont need another 25GB. I'm guessing that the GB's I dont use in that 25GB will be lost at the end of each month.

I am doing the same switching from Orcon to Vodafone Red Network. Several reasons, the main one being Orcon having no plans to get ADSL2 in my area (even though all exchanges around me have been done). Crap international performance and the price rise.

Got a letter from Orcon yesterday, not impressed. Its strictly speaking worse than the Vodafone plan I have now, although its not too far adrift of Vodafones current plans (still on the Broadband 3 legacy plan).

What I want to know is why competition is not bringing better deals to the table? If anything all the ISPs appear to be offering roughly the same deals, comprising less bandwidth for greater cost. Strikingly like the opposite of competition isn't it (speculate on that for a minute).

After getting the letter from Orcon yesterday though I had a quick look around - kudos to Xnet who look to be the only people doing things differently and offering some good plans.
