Hello there Scott,

A long overdue gripe, is it possible to have broadband internet through a landline, without actually having to pay for the phone connection?

What I mean is, I don't actually need a phone, I just need the internet...like many people, I use my cell-phone for all necessary calls.

Thanks in advance,

-G. North Shore.

Go to http://www.orcon.net.nz/orconathome/

And look at Purple or Purple+ plan

This is naked ADSL (ADSL without a phone)

You can also have a look at naked DSL plans from a range of providers here.

Correct about Purple+ - that is a naked broadband plan (i.e. broadband only, no dial tone delivered over the line).

Purple (without a +) is not naked broadband however. You still must have a phoneline with dial tone from either us or another provider.

Sounds good, but we still need a service where you don't need a phoneline at all, like WOOSH, but with better technology than WOOSH, as far as how the signals are distributed from WOOSH cell towers to peoples external modems are concerned...anyway.

You can take:
  • Wireless
  • Mobile Internet
Take a look at NZ Connections Wiki's Internet Plan and Pricing Comparisons.

Just an update, last week my friend filled out the D/Debit form that ORCON sent him in the post, that was all fine, then he actually walked into ORCON HQ North Harbour there to hand in, all fine, he even had a chat with the big boss there, yes the big boss..Now low n behold, ORCON said they're doing a credit check on him, as he's bit worried about an old debt incurred years ago, but incurred personally by someone else, will go against him...PLEASE give Murray bit of a break, he's even going to get a reference from a guy who is currently a ORCON customer and who lives right next door...is the credit check normal after one fills in the D/Debit form?
I feel bit responsible, as I'm the one who suggested my friend go with ORCON in the first place.

If you look at the fine print on most Credit Account Application forms, you will notice that one of the terms is along the following lines:

-  I/We authorise (vendor) to obtain credit information from (references supplied) and I/We hereby authorise those referees to disclose such information.

So, to answer your question, Yes, it is normal procedure for this type of credit checking to be done.

Unless, the debt is large and/or relatively recent, your friend shouldn't have anything to worry about.  Some years ago, a similar credit check turned up incorrect information which related to a former tenant rather than my company.  Until this happened, I hadn't realised that incorrect information was showing on my file, and was able to contact BayCorp and have it removed.

It is not a great idea to knowingly apply for a credit account if you have skeletons in the closet.  However, if the amount involved was small, or goes back a long way, then it probably won't make any difference.

An update re my friend trying to get into ORCON.

He was told couple days ago by some unhelpful person, that he cannot get it.

Now, I am prepared to pay the first 2 months myself..Give him a break ORCON! all the guy wants is your business, DON'T you want his??. You are much better than WOOSH, and this is what he needs to get away from and onto ORCON.

Imposible! Either way your still paying for the phone line connection. Below here is a breakdown of where the money would go if you where on adsl2+ which requires no phone line:

roughly $110 with orcon per month for a plan
out of that $110 aproximitly $60 would make up the internet part of the fee
out of that $110 aproximitly $45 would make up the phone connection
and about $4 or something would be line maintanance?
+data usage

Whereas if you had adsl1 which requires a phone line:
telecome phone line $45
line maintanance fee $4
broadband $60
+data usage

pretty much same deal but adsl2 can meet faster speeds. But that means nothing if like orcon! they do not buy enough international fibre pipe bandwidth for there clients. So it will go fast nationally but once it has to go through the fibre cable out of our country it will slow right down. At this stage it wouldnt matter if you had slower adsl1 or orcons adsl2.

Hi pistolpower,

You seem to have got a little confused about the difference between ADSL1 and ADSL2+, and naked and clothed (with phoneline) broadband.

ADSL2+ is a broadband standard, and does not mean that you require no phone line. You can have ADSL2+ with a phoneline or with out.

We do have one ADSL2+ plan that does not come with a phoneline (i.e. is naked broadband), and this is $79.95 per month (Purple+).

I hope that this makes things a little clearer.

Hey im not confused. It's very simple. And the orcon "phone lines" are not P.O.T.S. A beter way to describe the would be "V.O.I.P" (voice over internet phone). So if you have adsl2+ it is still naked with or without a voip line. The naked part actually refers to the pots line.

Adsl1 is over your pots (plain old telephone system) and is much slower than adsl2+ if you have a good line attenuation rate.
Adsl2+ is naked dsl. Does not require a telephone line (pots line). Uses VOIP. Faster. Better.

And in the case of our NZ isps you can have as many voip lines as the isp allows. The fact that orcon lacks either the infustructure, expertise, or the will to offer even basic voip features tells me more than i need to know. It reflects poorly on the companys name.

  1. Orcon plans don't include VoIP at all - they are indeed POTS
  2. As per part 1, all plans are not Naked DSL, other than Purple+ which states that it is Naked DSL.
  3. ADSL2+ is a standard and not some sort of product. ADSL2+ does not equal Naked DSL.
  4. As above, Naked DSL is where a standard landline service is not required. Naked DSL does not necessarily equal ADSL2+.

WOW....

I just presumed that since adsl2+ can be sold as naked dsl that orcon would do so. I mean why would you not want to sell them naked dsl without pots so that you can give them a free voip phone and force them into paying you instead of telecome??

lol my bad. :/ I feel stupid now lol. Ignore that last comment.
