Hi everyone,

Is anyone using a Spark Huawei HG659b router with an Orcon fibre connection? If so, could you please share your internet settings on the router, I can't connect to the router when using the Huawei HG659b router. The internet light is blinking on the router, but I think it may have something to do with the internet settings preventing me from getting an internet connection.

We recently got fibre on our street, and the stock Netcomm (NF18ACv) given to us has quite a weak wifi signal (losing signal once I go upstairs), whereas the Huawei HG659b has stronger signal (i used this router when we had vdsl, and didnt have any wifi issues), so that's why I'm trying to use the Huawei instead.

I've tried following the instructions on this thread, copying their internet settings exactly, but it's still not giving me any internet connection.

https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=82&topicid=193649&fbclid=IwAR2qid-lglYODFFvL2u_09NOi_xFOQEkXxy7_PV0qKVrDC_qsVTyAkbCdqY

I have the set up as - an ethernet cable from the ONT into the WAN port of the router, and then an ethernet cable from the of the LAN ports on the router to a computer.

Does it have anything to do with firmware?

Would appreciate any advice! thanks! :)

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.

Factory reset the router and start fresh. I recall a friend had problems changing one of the huawais from DSL to fiber and it only came right with a reset and starting from scratch.

@gordy7 yeah i have tried those settings on the link you posted, but no luck getting a connection there... really can't figure out what i'm doing wrong :(

@richms I have tried a factory reset as well, but that didn't work either. I think because the default settings after the reset are spark settings (since it's a spark router). Still trying to figure out what settings I need to change to cater for the Orcon connection. Will give the factory reset another try though...

Any chance you could ask your friend if/what settings he changed when using the Huawei router? (no worries if it's too much trouble).

Thanks for the replies.

Short term: Use your Netcomm router for fibre (WiFi turned off) and LAN link to the HG659b for your wireless... Messy...

I only use the HG659 on Voyager not the HG659b model.

How about changing from PPPoE to IPoE (DHCP).

I note that following Factory Reset it is recommended to delete all internet config settings - ADSL, VDSL etc.. before creating your new specific Fibre settings...

Edit... and include the Orcon DNS

Can you post a screenshot of your Huawei router settings page?

an ethernet cable from the ONT into the WAN port of the router

Which port on the ONT did you plug it into?

@Gordy7 - Okay, will give this a try as soon as I get home from work!

@spyware - Will also give this a try!

@DarkShadow - I copied the exact same settings posted on this thread here. Which was actually posted up by yourself! It is the GE1 port, I haven't touched the ONT since the chorus technician installed it.

Also just to confirm when doing the IPoE, I get my user name and password from Orcon yeah? so each individual has their unique username/password

or is the username and password simply:

Username: user@orcon.net.nz

Password: password

Cheers everyone. Appreciate the replies.

Orcon use IPoE/DHCP, so you don't actually need a username and password, this is used for ISPs that auth using PPPoE.

I'd imagine this is the cause of your issue,

You shouldn't need username/password for IPoE.

@evilonenz and @darkshadow - Oh right i see, oops.

Hmm as per this screenshot for connection type 'IP rounting (IP)' is the same as IPoE yeah? I've have replicated these settings but no luck.

I will try what Gordy7 recommended and add the DNS and delete all other settings except the ethernet one.

Another question sorry, is MSS the same as MTU? (wasn't able to find a straight answer on google) The Orcon website says to set MTU as 1490 (following this link)

But just following the settings from this screenshot (from @darkshadow) MSS is set at 0. Wondering if I should be setting MSS to 1490?

NAT type should also be left as NAPT?

Just can't help but keep thinking about this at work..wondering which setting i've got wrong lol..

Having the same issue (trying to set up spark provided modem for Orcon fibre).

also Gordy7 link disappeared from the Orcon website too!

Genesis133 would you mind telling me how did you solve the problem? i.e. what you changed on the Huawei HG659b router to get it going, please???

Here is the link again that Gordy7 previously posted.

https://help.orcon.net.nz/hc/en-us/articles/360020788354-Setting-up-a-non-Orcon-modem

I also posted previously a post/screenshot of the settings you should be using on the Spark router. Add in the DNS also. Hope this helps.
