Hi All,

Sometime ago, I bought a 3 pack of Google WiFi units to use at home. At the moment they're setup in bridge mode, still using the NF4V modem that I initially had for DSL broadband as primary DHCP server for the wifi units.

I'd like to remove the NF4V from the network, and switch the Google WiFi units to normal mode to allow for a mesh network, however whenever I attempt this, I'm unsure as to whether the fibre box should be providing it with a DHCP WAN address or if I'm supposed to input a static one (or further to that, if there's an Orcon account specific username/password I need to enter for that to work).

Does anyone have experience in getting this wetup working? I see Orcon are offering the Google WiFi units for new subscribers so assume this is a supported setup/configuration.

If Orcon requires VLAN tagging on the fibre, then you'll have to stick with using the NF4V in bridge mode to the Google WiFi because it doesn't support VLAN tagging.

If Orcon did not provide them then they will not be supporting them

I suspect the ones Orcon provide have different software loaded

I'd be sceptical they'd be custom configuring all these Google (x 3 per set) devices before sending to the end-user, surely there must be a set of configuration values that can be applied for it to operate?

I'll call Orcon tech support and get the full story.

My experience (with Slingshot) is that the ISP will advise these are used only as mesh APs, not as the router. I don't think the Google units can be used as the router when VLAN tagging is required.

The two solutions I see as possible are:

Change ISP to one that doesn't require VLAN tagging
Change mesh hardware to one that enables VLAN tagging, such as the TP-Link Deco. This is the solution I used and it works well with Slingshot

Somewhat frustratingly, Orcon Technical support weren't very helpful. Straight up refused to enter a discussion around Google Wifi setup saying they weren't trained to support it. When I asked about the WAN config for my fibre connection, so I could attempt to configure myself on Google Wifi, she misinterpreted and sent me a generic page link covering how to log into your modem...

This seems destined not to happen, but baffles me that Orcon would provide/offer these units to other customers without any consideration for poeple wanting to set them up this way.

unless you have a connection with no vlan tagging then you need to have a router before them.

i suspect you will have to keep the NF4V in the mix or replace it with a different router.

orcon offer the google wifi as an extra ontop of their existing router to help people extend their wifi. you still need the router there. it says so on the help page about setting the google wifi up. In the My Orcon app, select Wi-Fi from the menu and turn your modem Wi-Fi off.
