About a month ago I decided to upgrade to Orcon ADSL2+.
Expecting a huge difference in speed. Well, my speed
has been hovering on 2.8Mbps. Barely an improvement
from the last plan. None of those "up to 24Mbps" speed.
I'm not that naive and expect to get close to that
advertised speed but I'm not even on the quarter of
that speed. Maybe one-eight. Sigh, really disappointed.

I live in Northcote central, not sure where's the closest
exchange is from my place. If it isn't for Vodafone's
connection fee, I would've try them and ditch Orcon.

Try posting your line specs through your router/modem webpage. The attenuation of the line will help you figure out how far you are from the exchange.

Did you even read what he wrote? What your after is something more like this (from your modem, probably a status page somewhere)(for the record, these are from my modem)):

Line State    Connected
Modulation    ADSL_2plus
Annex Mode    Annex A
Max Tx Power    -38 dBm/Hz

Item            Downstream    Upstream    Unit
SNR Margin        12        34        dB
Line Attenuation    31        18        dB
Data Rate        6224        165        kbps

(hey cool, GZ has built in table stuff)(epic i broke GZ layout xD, so lets NOT use those tables)

Not some *ahem* company graphs to try to sell you ADSL2+.

So all in all:

Did you even read what he wrote?

Pretty sure he did, as the graphs tell you the distance in comparison to the line attenuation.

The Internode one is the best, and it's the one I always use.

Thanks manhinli.

Yes I did read it.Smile

That is why I added the graphs so that once p1noy has his attenuation he could work out his distance from the exchange and also his probable speed.

Yes I usually use the Internode one also.

Hey Guys
I'm considering ORCON ADSL2+ in Sandringham... I've checked out my 'stats' from my router:

ADSL Firmware Version: 5.00.04.00 - 5.00.03.00 - 5.00.03.00 Annex A - 01.07.2b - 0.52
ADSL Software Version: V3.00B02.NZ.20060711
Line State Connected
Modulation ADSL_2plus
Annex Mode Annex A
Max Tx Power -38 dBm/Hz

Item Downstream Upstream Unit
SNR Margin 13 31 dB
Line Attenuation 26 14 dB
Data Rate 7547 165 kbps

My line attenuation seems to hint that I should be in pretty good shape on ADSL2+... but I don't really know what I'm looking for... who you guys concur?

Is there a concensus on how well the ADSL2+ performs in Sandringham by any chance? Anyone else you'd recommend in the neighbourhood?

Will my D-Link DSL-G604T support ADSL2+ ? it is currently running V3.00B02.NZ.20060711 firmware build...

Thanks in advance for your help!

I am not on the Sandringham exchange but on the Glenfield exchange.
But I do have the same attenuation as you and am on Orcon +.
Here is what I get speedwise.

Here is my modem status page. (Orcon home hub though I have used the same modem as you with equal results)

Downstream rate:13544 kbpsUpstream rate:1019 kbps ADSL Line Status:Cable connectedLine mode:ADSL2+Maximum line rate:13820 kbps (upstream)Noise margin:6.5 dB (upstream)Line attenuation:26.6 dB (upstream)Output power:20.4 dBm

Where abouts is the Glenfield Exchange?, cos i live in Glienfield also, and i get less the half of ur DL speed. Perhaps it my router?

Attenuation isn't the only factor for speeds, it's a big one but not the only one.

Basically, if you were getting around 2-3mbps on ADSL1, you ain't gonna get much more on ADSL2.

That speed by itself suggests you're over 2km from the exchange. At around 2.5km+ you may not get any difference at all.

I got 20% increase, from 2-2.8, then moved to Orcon and increased now to about 4.5 actual internet traffic speed.
This was lucky, with DSL you can't just put some figures in a calculator and say "Hey, I'm geting 200k less than the reading says I should!". It just doesn't work like that.

Try testing at different times, try removing all devices from the line except your modem, try swapping modems or filters then test after 15 mins, and try getting people nearby (next door if possible) to run tests too, so you can determine if your speeds are normal or not.

On ADSL 1, I was getting 5.5M, on ADSL2, I was getting variable speeds between 10-12Mbps. I added 6Mbps to my connection speed by removing the surge protector connection of the DSL line through my UPS. I added another 2Mbps of speed by swapping out an old 10 metre phone extension lead for a new 3 metre one. The importance of in house cabling is huge, as it added 8Mbps of speed to my otherwise average performance.
