P2P / torrents not working

Hi people, first post, been tearing my hair out to try and figure this out.
We recently switched from Telecom to Orcon, and ever since, none of my P2P stuff has worked.
I run OSX, we're on the OrconHomeHub on a LLU ADSL2 plan.
Acquisition (which runs on Gnutella network) won't connect at all.Xtorrent (my torrent program) will search, but not download anything.Even iChat (like AOL instant messenger) didn't connent initally - I changed the port and it worked.
I do not understand port forwarding, but perhaps this is what I need to do? Can anyone point me in the right direction or help out with this?

Hi again,
So on the homehub I've set up port forwarding for the appropriate ports AND NAT. Still nothing.
Is anyone on Orcon LLU broadband getting onto P2P programs? Is it just me?Is it a problem with Orcon or the modem or what?
This is driving me nuts!

Ive had this problem all day, I suspect orcon is starting to block popular trackers.

I set utorrent up to go thru a public proxy and it connected fine, but quite a bit slower via a proxy

Works here, have Orcon LLU and Utorrent seems quite happy, I wouldn't call the speed awesome, but working, and not any different from when I had ADSL through Telecom wholesale...

I've had all trackers time out sometimes, though not since moving to Orcon@home+. I do note that some recent versions of uTorrent have a problem with sometimes losing connections to trackers (for example http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=47208).

Ok, this is interesting..
So late last night, long after giving up on this problem, it was suddenly all working fine (sunday).Today, all working fine, until about 1 hour ago, then it dropped out.
So I'm wondering if this is them throttling / shutting down connections during peak times. If so, it sucks.
If this continues, I'm off to find another ISP..

Ive heard rumours that Orcon have rules in place when Network Utilisation reaches a certain level it starts blocking or rate shaping torrents.

I can understand why they do that, but it pisses me off that it isn't mentioned when you look at their website.
Also, I'm not being rate-shaped. I'm being cut off.

Hmm, just checked old lappie with Utorrent, it is still humming away, haven't noticed any significant changes, still sweet.
Random thought, perhaps Orcon are managing traffic depending on load on different network nodes, perhaps on an exchange with with a few more users traffic is shaped, but not on others? What exchanges are generating the negative posts on this forum?

Linwood and Avonhead are a long way from where I am, a quick check indicates that Christchurch exchange/s have not been unbundled as yet, so not really comparing apples with apples, sounds like you are still served via Telecom wholesale network, I'll leave it to you guys to figure that out. Would not surprise me at all if problems relate to how Telecom are managing their network.... Depending on who they are selling bandwidth to...

Actually I seem to think Orcon are finally implimenting the policies they proposed a year or so ago. From memory they looked at previous months usage and added you to a 'Leechers' pool if your data usage was beyond the acceptable use threshold, and if the trend continued you remained in the 'leechers pool' which is managed traffic, I think they are startig to manage there usage during peak times by blocking popular trackers and throttling torrents. basically if you schedule your torrents, it should be fine.

Orcon seem to block the ability to connect to certain trackers.

During peak periods, I'm occasionally unable to announce to any tracker. All it does it time out. However if I retry after peak period, or say for example if I leave them on overnight they're going when I wake up in the morning.

This doesn't matter if it's a private tracker and I'm downloading a linux ISO, or a public tracker and I'm trying to download a World of Warcraft Update. All are affected, and I know for sure the tracker is online and responsive.

Screw you Orcon. I have a right to use the data cap I purchase off you whether it be 2am in the morning, or 7pm at night. This is just another reason why I'm leaving and going back to Telecom. At least Telecom don't shape my traffic and believe it or not they can compete on value with you now too with the addition of their latest plans.

Examples of tracker not responding:

HERE'S A TIP FOR YOU: Do not subscribe to Orcon as your ISP if you like to do any of the following

a) Game
b) Download
c) Browse outside of NZ (see here for more information regarding that)

Personally, im not overly pissed that they do it, but im super pissed that they havent actually come clean and advised people of it, only thing that annoys me is it kicks in at about 4:30pm, if im really lucky I can manage to finish off certain good TV episodes that come out about 3pm on a Tuesday.
