Hey. I'm currently on one of Orcon's old plans (15GB FS/FS) and am looking at switching to the platinum+ plan (25GB cap, homeline etc). Firstly, would you recommend doing this? Secondly, according to Orcon's website, it's not available in my area yet (Orakei, Auckland). Any ideas when it will be?

If you're happy with your current plan (i.e. Orcon as a whole), I can't see why you wouldn't change to the new unbundled plans.  They are better value and perform "better", faster etc.  Having said that, since it's not available in your area it's a moot point.

Have you contacted Orcon to ask when it will be available? If it isn't in the near future, as above, everything else is a moot point.

According to Orcon's coverage map, you should be inside their Orcon+ coverage area, unless you're connected to a cabinet???

Hey. Thanks for the replies. I typed in my phone number (09-522-7***) and it says:

"We are currently unable to deliver the Orcon+ Network (LLU) to your home.
Want to know when? Click Here and we'll let you know!"

I've 'clicked here' many times but I've never received an email back from them letting me know. It's strange as according to their 'coverage map' my street in Orakei is in the purple..

Your phone line itself will be on the Remuera exchange, but due to the distance between Orakei and Remuera you'll almost certainly be going through a cabinet between your premises and that exchange. Orcon can not offer their Orcon+ services to customers that are on a cabinet (yet...), and you really don't want to NOT be on a cabinet or your connection performance will degrade tremendously.

Stick with what you've got. If it ain't broken, don't fix it! Wink

Yeah. Service is fine. Only problem is, it's rather expensive. I'm paying about $65 a month for Pro Max/Max Broadband Line Speed with 15gb of data. I almost ALWAYS go over this, which costs me an additional $10 for 5gb.

What would you recommend?

Things on the site are also changing tomorrow night... so if you don't find something's right... it's going to change.
I've done quite a lot of work over the last few weeks on this.

Anyway, to go with the Orcon thing, as you're not in the Orcon+ network, then may I suggest getting the Gold plan or Purple with Homeline (which is $45) and make the plan yourself? The plans are pretty good.

Hmmm still rather pricey. $110 a month, FS/128, 10gb cap, phoneline. Will wait until tomorrow to see the changes to nzconnections and see what other options are open to me. I've been with Orcon since December 06 so I don't think I'm in a contract with them anymore - therefore no disconnection fees? Don't really want to leave them, as speeds have been relatively good and service has been somewhat reliable, but if there are cheaper options out there with bigger caps, I may look at switching ISPs.

Price and cap, while significant, aren't everything. Small sacrifices there may lead to bigger sacrifices elsewhere . . .

Hmm fair point. Although I really can't afford to keep shelling out $10 for 5gb everytime I go over my cap. 'Tis a shame I can't get on their '+' plans yet, as they look perfect for me. Will have a look at my options though...

If you change to a new standard (not Orcon+) plan, I believe their excess usage charges are now $2 per GB. Still the same price for 5GB, but it means if you use 6GB over you're only paying $12 instead of $20, and if you only go 1GB over you're only paying $2 instead of $10.

Yep - excess data are as follows:

Orcon@Home plans - $2/GB
Orcon@Home+ plans - $1/GB
