hey just a quick question i have just changed over to Orcon and have found that the connection drop out is terrible. I am trying to torrent open office (freeware) and aloth although it has over 1000 seeders the connection is dropping out at least every 15 seconds. at the same time I am downloading the windows 7 beta off the microsoft website but that shouldnt make any difference. the internet led on the router keeps going red and i cannot even load web pages. (it took over 5 refreshes to get to this one).

any help would be great.

No.. they dont,

what sort of router do you have? are you on Orcon LLU + ?

hmm seams abit random i stopped the download from microsoft and kept the torrents going and now the nets stoped dropping out.

um im running a linksys wag200g modem/router. supports adsl 2+ unless im mistaken and yes i do beleave im on the new networks

within 5seconds of me starting the download from microsoft again the net dropped out and took 30secs to start up again after i stopped it.

yea WAG200, its the only Linksys router ive found so far that doesnt work properly on some Orcon LLU connections (including mine)

Mine was fine for the first couple months, then would drop out, usually as soon as i max out the speed

( do a speed test, did it every time for me )

I tried 3 WAG200s (ive sold alot of them) on my connection, same problem, all of the sudden

I tried various firmwares on them but didnt solve the issue.

Have tried other Linksys, DLINK and Dynalink routers on my connection and they have been fine, not really sure whats up with the WAG200, ive installed dozens of them in the past and have always been reliable, just not on Orcon LLU.

hmm doesnt seam to do it when i do a speed test i did a few and no problems

First thing : I wouldn't admit or directly state that you were to torrenting copyrighted content from the states. For one things theres Section 92a which means if they prove that you have been downloading copyrighted content you haven't paid for (or have a right to IE podcasts) 3 times you can have your internet cut and you banned from getting it. The other thing is discussions of such things is specifically forbidden by the rules of this forum.

As for your connection I can recommend a Dynalink 1025w. But first : Would you be able to post the stats of your ADSL modem router ? Things like the Signal to Noise ration , Sync rate , attentuation , if interleaving is on or off , modulation method etc . There should be a page on your modem router that gives you this information.

The light going red means it's disconnected from the exchange.

Oh and

Might want to confirm that. Confirm what settings your modem should have.

The answer to your question is no, as far as I know and have experienced Orcon do not do this with Torrents.

Why bother Torrenting it ??

I downloaded Windows 7 Beta when it first came out it only took 33 minutes to download on my Orcon + connection.

I live in Glenfield also and have a slightly slower connection than you but it only disconnects occasionally.
When I first started on Orcon + I had a lot of disconnects and found that the problem was in the phone connections in my house.

k well ive sorted out that orcon doesnt do anything about torrenting and that the fault seams to lye with the modem i have a wag200w and from the look of the linksys forums and it seams alot of people have this problem when trying to download large files in one go and there doesnt seam to be any fix.

can someone recommend a better modem/router that supports adsl 2+ that doesnt cut out lol.

It's the combination of two factors..

A lot of cheap modems/routers have average firmware and can't handle the number of connections that torrenting produces and of course by default torrent clients are configured to use a riduclous number of tcp/ip connections.

Try reducing the number of connections that bit torrent is allowed to use in your torrent clients config.

eg: utorrent config screen.

If you can't get good results by reducing the number of connections then if you just want something simple all in one that works I suggest the:

Dynalink RTA 1025W

Now... if you want to get your geek on....

I'm using a Dynalink RTA1320 ADSL2+ modem + a Linksys WRT54GL (custom firmware), very flexible and reliable setup. By seperating the router/wireless/switch from the modem you can change the modem later on for example when Telecom rolls our VDSL.

the Linksys WAG160N gave the best dsl connection speed of the various routers i tested on Orcon LLU, it connects almost 1mbit faster Down than the WAG200 on my LLU, had half a megabit faster than DLINK 504s etc

However, the wireless in the WAG160N is flakey compared to every other linksys wifi router i have used, flakey enough that i have disabled it entirely. Is rock solid on the DSL stability side tho.

I had a DrayTek and it dropped the ADSL quite a lot on Orcon LLU.

I have the Orcon HomeHub now and it is rock solid ADSL, wifi, LAN, . . . and only $5 per month. When Orcon do fancy new stuff it is ready and in the mean time it is going to be 2 years + before my $5/month ($60/year) adds up to the value of an equivalent modem.
