As a disgruntled Telecom user living in Northcross, I am looking to change to Orcon. I am in range of the ADSL2+ coverage from the Browns Bay exchange however I won't see any improvement in speed if I'm on the fringe of the reception area. Does anyone know where the exchange in Browns Bay is?

It's on the corner of Beach Road and Browns Bay Road. At least, that's where I've always thought it was. So depending on where you are maybe 3 or 4km?

I discovered on Telecom's Wholesale webpage that a brand spanking new ADSL2+ cabinet is right at my doorstep on Carlisle Road (perhaps this explains the current boost in my download speed to 8MB). Is there any chance Orcon have some gear in that cabinet too?

Currently subLLU (ie 3rd parties like Orcon putting gear into cabinets as opposed to exchanges) is not fully finalised as to when and what locations Orcon will be putting gear in is something only they can answer.

However if infact you have have been put on a cabinet you should see a change in your Sync rate and line attenauation, what are those figures. You can still get on to an Orcon plan (via Telecom wholesale) via that cabinet.

My attenuation rates are 22dB for downstream (7616K) and 15dB for upstream (160K). They are capped for ADSL at the moment although I am tempted to carry on with Telecom and get these rates boosted upto ADSL2+ speeds. Not sure about sync rates, is this SNR Margin? (sitting at 15dB downstream and 31dB upstream)

If I can change to Orcon, will I defintiely be able to utilise this cabinet to take advantage of its proximity to my home? Will the speeds be any better? (some posts on the Orcon forums mention that the HomeHub boosts speed by over 10%).

I also noted forums that mention that ISP's have their own preference over which modems are used. Telecom seem to be using the new Thompson modems, Orcon like Siemens etc.. Will the HomeHub work effectively with this new Telecom cabinet as it isn't Orcon's gear?

Since you are connected to a Cabinet, if you move to Orcon, you will remain on the Cabinet and connected to Telecom Wholesale, rather than into the Orcon DSLAMS at the Browns bay exchange.

Do you know what Brownsbay Cabinet you are connected to? We have a trial in one of the browns bay cabinets currently.

Hi, 22dB should see ADSL2+ speeds more like 16-18Mb/s, but it also indicates around 1.6km of cable to the cabinet or exchange, if this does not seem right then maybe you have a wiring issue. Normally there is no ADSL1 or 2 restriction, if the DSLAM is infact a 2+ one then it should sync to its fully capable rate (line dependant) unless you modem is only ADSL1 or restricted, also with a 160k uplink you will be unlikely to pass much faster than 4.5Mb/s TCP traffic.

I must be connected to a cabinet on Carlisle Road, close to the day care centre for it to be 1.6kms from my house. I think they must of added a new one as previously my nearest exchange was in Torbay (speeds of around 2-3000Kbps).

ISP has service restricted as I am on an ASDL 1 plan and I don't think my router does ADSL 2+ anyways (DLink DSLG604T).

Can anyone confirm if the use of the HomeHub will lead to further speed improvements? Will the Siemens unit work equally as good on the Telecom system as it does on the Orcon?

The 604 has issues with ADSL2+ even if GenII there are still issues, which would explain your ADSL1 speeds eventhough it may think its doing ADSL2+

I dealt with a customer the otherday with a Orcon supplied Siemens homehub on a Telecom ISAM, it synced pretty much the same as a Broadcom modem (which is best with ISAM) so I dont think you have much to worry about. Each chipset will have a minor differnce in connection speed not only due to the DSLAM its talking to but to how each chipset responds to the line conditions, so I would not get too concerned with that side of it, typically any variance is small change compared to the step up in moving from ADSL1 to 2+ and moving closer to the Port as you have just done.
