I see that 2degrees states in their T&Cs:

(e) You may not make 0900 calls, collect calls, special number calls, or any calls where charges are not immediately deducted from your Pay Now Account, or use your Mobile Phone for voice over internet protocol (“VOIP”) or message over internet protocol (“MOIP”) communications.

Although you'd want 3G data services to do VoIP, does this mean that they do not allow users to use SIP clients over VoIP from their mobiles? I have not see such conditions from other mobile operators, so it seems a strange condition.

Maybe ensuring all calls result in payment to 2degrees is the way they keep their rates lower than others.

Same as telecom xt T&C's "6. You agree to...do not use your Mobile Phone or the Services for voice over internet protocol or messaging over internet protocol"

Any reason why? I mean the telco is still getting your money for using their data services so it's not like you are totally bypassing them as you could with callback services.

Im just guessing...
For voda/telecom with their ~90c per min calling rates, theres a lot more profit in calling charges than data charges.
However with 2degrees' cheaper calls and more expensive data then this arguement isnt so solid

They all say that because there is no way of delivering QoS for a voice call and the fundamental issues of massive jitter during site handovers.

If they didn't say this people would start complaining when VoIP didn't work peoperly all the time.

OK, when you say 'QoS for a voice call', do you mean 'QoS for a voice call over VoIP'?

If so, I agree. If you are stationary the problem is not so large, but cell handover would be a problem unlike with other data usage where you would just get an intermittent delay in transmission.

OK, so I'm still trying to figure out why none of our Australian mobile providers (from what I could find) have such clauses as in NZ, and in fact some of the AU providers actively market HSPA services for voice traffic at very low rates as a complete alternative to voice over GSM (one provider will even block outgoing voice calls over GSM so you can't accidentally call that way unless you ask them to unblock it).
