I seem to be getting hammered with this text from 2degrees:

"You are out of the Broadband Zone. All usage will be charged against your
National Data Bundle whilst available. When this is used you will be charged
at the Casual rate of 50c/MB."

Odd... does this imply there will be broadband "zones" specific to the three main areas??

I get this in Cambridge, whenever the phone uses data....

Prior to data packs being available, there was no difference for me, except that you transitioned from acceptable EDGE speeds to Vodafone GPRS speeds (which were horrible). Given you are in Cambridge, you'd be effectively roaming 100% on Vodafone, and should still be on GPRS. If you're not, that implies that the 3G network is going live, not only natively in the 3 main metros, but also when roaming on Vodafone. And if 3G roaming implies casual data, then they are effectively limiting their potential client-base to the 3 main centres - I can't see why they would do that as it would be very poor for business.

The other possibility is that you are using a 2 degrees sim, but have registered on the Vodafone network - non-native roaming if you will - which means you will pay standard roaming charges.

Hi,

Yes, it's on an iPhone 2g, so no 3g band. It has the carrier bundle installed, but is definitely on Voda due to location and "VodaNZ" icon. It changes to the 2degrees logo whenever I'm up in Akl.

The reason I believe something has changed in the network as absolutely no changes were made to the phone. My wife's iPhone 2g is doing the same too. It just started last night around 8:30pm.

I've just ordered a Galaxy S, and am hoping the 2degrees 3g network (when launched) will extend to Cambridge via 900.....

But what about the texts? That seems like a BS message to keep on sending your customers!

Some phones check data every 5 minutes so imagine getting a text every 5 minutes??!

Guessing the SMS will only be sent when you leave the 2D 3G/2G coverage

Maybe the broadband zones refer to HSDPA service rather than ordinary 3G? Isn't that the normal implication of 'Mobile Broadband'?

Nah it seems some people receive the messages each time they logon. What if you live on the boarder of the network?

2D would not build 3G release 99 sites only this would just be silly. All 2D 3G sites will be HSPA

I just checked the t&c's on their website and it does not mention anything about roaming data charges within NZ. But it is dated a 15th of June revision.

Firstly we need to apologise for the out of context text messages that some customers were inadvertently sent over the past few hours. Rest assured these alerts have been turned off and you'll not receive them again.
All will become clearer over the coming months and you can be assured that when we do turn on our shiny new 3G network - all of our customers, no matter where they may be will be better off than they are today.
I look forward to being able to give you more details as we move closer to flicking the switch.

I have not kept up with VF but dont they have some sites that are not HSPDA?
Maybe its got somehting to do with that.

2degrees must have a bad roaming agreement because the MVMO's can offer real 3g prices solely on the VF network. It looks like 2degrees wont offer this.

What it reads like is the customer will have a "broadband zone plan" and a "national data bundle".

Coming months? But you are opening up public access to the 3G network pretty quick... I would have thought it would be ready within 4 weeks.
