Hi
For the past 4 or 5 days I've been having a hard time connecting to anything outside NZ. Pinging a variety of international sites shows anywhere from 10% to 30% packet loss depending on the time. Speed/quality within NZ haven't changed and is still fine. Traceroutes indicate it could be something fairly upstream is causing this. I haven't found anything of interest here or on other sites so I thought I'd post. I've called the Orcon help desk's and followed their instructions, testing different computers, modems and phone jacks to no avail. Is anyone else having these issues?

Hmm nope mate, it does slow down during peak hour, but otherwise I don't think I've seen any packet losses... congestion yes, line quality though, is not an issue for me.

It was bad yesterday afternoon. At one stage I was getting 16Kbits while local speed test gave 16Mbits..

Yip been using a trial version of ping plotter and been seeing 10% to 30% packet loss in the evenings. Occurs on the asianetcom hops.

Good luck getting any help from their helpdesk, the only thing that happens is you end up repeating the pointless tests over and over, then get told that the issue doesn't exist and the ticket closed.

I still can't load any of these sites unfortunately. I don't know why the ping is so high with my modem, pinging it normally gives <1 ms.

From those hops to your modem it appears that it may be faulty, I would reccomend testing another modem if possible or if not calling Orcon for a free one to test / replace yours with. (will take at least 2-3 working days to arrive)

well now i am encountering offshore websites based in aussie/ asia/ and Europe with very very download speeds - sorry have only been using speedtest.net but from auckland to japan its been 0.28MB tonight, and australia around 1.00mb, in contrast san francisco is getting 3mb which is the same as auckland

and for those that say 3mb is rather sad - I was getting 7mb until last week when telecom turned on the new cabinets in my street

phoned orcon about what they can do and said nothing unless the speed drops to 1mb when they would complain to chorus, the "helpdesk" said most of their customers get 3mb and its "ok" - not happy!

guess my alternative is to switch to telecom and make the most of the cabinet over the road

A

@ardvark

I would reccomend contacting Orcon again as with that type of speed reduction there should be no issue with lodging a fault and having you moved to a wholesale plan. This will resolve your speed issues and likely provide an increase in speed overall due to the cabinet being closer to you then the exchange that you are currently / was connecting to.

I sent my tracerts to orcon support...I have not had a reply. That was two days ago.

Real bad tonight. Snappy locally, Orcon and NZ Herald etc. But am timing out to Facebook, Google and Twitter.

Fine here at Geekzone.

I got a CSR to reset my port and "bump me up to a faster profile" and international speeds a little bit better, but certainly not perfect.

But at least I can actually load international webpages now...

Been having slow issues here for the last 2-3 days as well, terrible tonight.  Sucks, I haven't had issues with my Orcon speeds in almost a year.  Something is definitely amiss.

Orcon is unuseble for me in the evenings on international websites for about the last 4 months.  It seems they are way over subscribed for International traffic.  I am on a full speed up and down and from 5 pm they are at about 250kb /sec that is on a good day.  Local sites are fine.

There was another big thread here Check " Orcon slow today"  Apparently the only way to sort this out is go to another ISP, Which I am doing with a building move in a couple of months.

I had probally over 100 disconnects, they called out a chorus tech "nothing was wrong at the exchange". They changed the port over at the exchange on Monday...

LOL and behold, not a single disconnect and im flying back along to the old service I signed up for.

=)
