I've avoided Slingshot up to now, but $120 per month for a phone line and un-capped full-speed internet is just too good to pass by.

Has anybody had any time on this package such that they could report on the line quality?

PS: I'm also confused by some of the reactions to AYCE packages - isn't more internet better?

According to the telemarketer they have upgraded the exchange in my area and that's why they can off the deal.

I hear ya - and if ANYONE else was offering a comparable deal I'd go with them, but I've got a 800 Mb per day cap from Actrix and that was the best deal I could find at the time and it's making me crazy. I won't have to call on their help desk unless they break something, so maybe I can squeak by -- If it turns out to be a mistake I'll make sure it's well documented here.

Unless you need to use bittorrent or HTTP bulk download sites (rapidshare, megaupload, hotfile etc), Its pretty good. Fine for standard web browsing, streaming etc. Its possible to get significantly more data than you would with a capped plan, it just comes in slower.

All the Slingshot plans are pretty bad in terms of traffic throughput being consistent and fast, even http data (eg web pages with java and the bigger downloads) can be painfully slow at peak times. "All You Can Eat" is more related to billing I would say, the whole ISP has been through the stomach stapling process so its more like "all you can drip-feed"...




Time to find a new industry!

Time will tell. I'll be doing a bunch of speed tests over the next couple of days to compare to the "after" speeds -- anyone got any recomendations on speed test sites?

When you're on Slingshot:

Use this to measure backhaul/handover performance
http://speedtest.slingshot.co.nz/

Use this to measure domestic transit via APE/WIX
http://www.xnet.co.nz/speedtest/

Use this to check other domestic transit ie: interconnection with Telecom
http://zeus.jetstream.co.nz

A mix of local and international tests
http://bgrade.bage.net.nz/

Comparing the results of these can show you where the problem lies, domestic interconnection... APE/WIX peering... backhaul/handover.. international...

However take results with a grain of salt as Slingshot probably prioritises speedtest traffic over other types of traffic ie: general www, email, http downloads so they look better than they are.

Also in the case of Slingshot I'm fairly confident their backhaul and handover will be extremely congested in peak time and performance will be worse than your previous ISP (depending on who your previous ISP was).

  And, yes, the technician I talked to while trying to get confirmation of line speed acknowledged that they (Slingshot) "give priority to people who are at their monitor" over those using P2P.

  I don't mike a little "packet shaping" (as we used to call it) 10 or 15% advantage to screen-watchers over P2Pers - but dropping down from 10 to 0.8 (as I've seen posted here someplace) just isn't on.  Still no word back from either the Commerce Commission or the Advertising Standards Authority on my complaints.

I'm joining the long line of people leaving SS. They're just not worth it. It doesn't matter if you pay $1 or a $100, you should expect to be treated with respect. I had my phone, broadband and mobile with them for just under a year, They always blame it on the number of people who have signed up lately... well, let me help you there.
