Hi everyone,

I've just recently moved to Open Monthly Plan of $29 a month and after I've used up the 50MB, I've bought the 1GB BB Zone plan. Recently, on my trip from Wellington to New Plymouth, I've tried to use the new Google Map Navigation, using GPS connection to run the Turn-by-turn Google Navigation Program.

When I got outside of Wellington, the Nav direction stopped working, so I turned off the Turn-by-turn settings and only use the GPS. When I got to New Plymouth, I checked my balance and it told me I've used $21.92 for the GPS!!! So just to confirm, GPS usage will be charged using the National Data Pack and not the BB Zone pack outside of BB Zone? Or does it not use National Data Pack and just charge a casual rate?

Thank you

It doesn't matter what the application is. If you are inside a broadband zone (in this case, Wellington & suburbs) you use Broadband Data. Outside that, you use National Data (50MB pack, Pay Monthly bundle).

Once your available pack(s) are used up, you switch to casual rates.

However, you say you bought a broadband pack, so you should have also a) been sent a text to tell you when you moved out of the broadband zone and b) have had to manually unlock the casual rate data while outside a broadband zone by sending UNLOCK to 233.

I assume you are using an iPhone or android phone? To dl the maps you need data. 2d rip us with no auto data packs...

SteveOn, I suggest you create a new discussion about your opinion on 2degrees' business practices, instead of trying to hijack every other 2degrees thread.

My initial thought was that GPS is data used through Google satellite and bypass 2D network, but in this case I did receive a txt saying that

"a) been sent a text to tell you when you moved out of the broadband zone and b) have had to manually unlock the casual rate data while outside a broadband zone by sending UNLOCK to 233."

It told me that I don't have any MB left in the National Pack, so I couldn't use the navigation, but instead I turned off the navigation and only used the GPS app using only the GPS signal. But it charged National Data Pack for using GPS outside the zone, compare to EDGE data?

RocKai: My initial thought was that GPS is data used through Google satellite and bypass 2D network,

While I would hesitate to say that Google don't have satellites, your phone certainly doesn't. The GPS receiver only tells you your coordinates on Earth.* It does not provide a data feed for the maps of the area around you.

All data used is via the phone's data connection. Doesn't matter whether it's GPRS, EDGE or 3G.

As I said in my original post, it doesn't matter what the application is, you're still using the same data.

* If I don't put the star, someone's going to correct me. Strictly speaking the satellite signal doesn't tell you where you are, it tells you what the time is, and where the satellite is. By comparing the time signals from 3 or more satellites you can work out your relative distance to each satellite, and then, since you know where the satellites are, you can work out where you are.

Is everyone happy? :-)

I think you should read the Google Maps terms of services again, if you ever read it. Google Maps does not have maps on device. All maps are downloaded as you need them, in tiles. It uses a constant data connection.

The GPS data is just your location, calculated by the software based on the signal received from satellites. The signal is just a set of coordinates. All map is still downloaded via mobile data.

If you don't want to pay for mobile data on Google Maps, then I suggest you buy a third party map software. Those in general have the maps on the device itself, and no mobile data is used.

GPS based mapping apps on Phones are great for finding your way around a new, or unfamiliar, town... But using them to get from one town to another on fairly straight forward routes (that are otherwise well signposted) will use data. Especially if your device has to keep downloading maps along the way.

And keep A-GPS turned off too as thats trickling thru data always.

@RocKai: What sort of phone do you have? Many phones do have data free navigation (eg Nokia Maps) or paid apps such as TomTom / Garmin on your phone. These do not use any data (other than a-gps which can be turned off)

MotoNav works just fine on Motorola Milestone. You have to purchase the licence after 60 days of trial though, and that too is available through their website.

That's it then. Not all models have Motonav installed, depending on which country it's sold. The New Zealand model comes with Motonav ready to use free for 60 days.
