My upload is very sluggish, always has been, I am wondering if this is normal?

What I mean by sluggish upload for instance, when doing a DSL speed test, my download speed will immediately increase to max speed which is around 7mbit.. however, when it does the upload test, it takes up to 8 seconds for the speed to build up to it's max speed which is around 0.8mbit.. is this normal?

Also, I find I lag a lot while playing games, specifically when a game transitions into a higher populated area, I'm not talking about WoW with hundreds of people in one area, I just mean in FPS games, where one moment there are 3 people in an area, and suddenly there might be 5+ and suddenly I begin to lag at the increased need for bandwidth in this situation... feels like I am desynced with the server too.. nobody else complains of any lag though so it's just me.

Another question.. if I am having a routing issue to a server, (having done a tracert) is this something my ISP can resolve or is it dependent on the server in question?  The server is a quakelive server, 202.172.99.1 and the server is sydney based, yet once the tracert gets to sydney it jumps to melbourne and adds 14ms to my ping time making it 49, in the past I have not had this problem and pinged around 35.

Here also are my line stats:
DSL Status:                             UP
DSL Modulation Mode:              ADSL2+
DSL Path Mode:                       FAST
Downstream Rate:                   9102 Kbps
Upstream Rate:                      1017 Kbps
Downstream Margin:                5 db
Upstream Margin:                    6 db
Downstream Line Attenuation:   25
Upstream Line Attenuation:      19
Downstream Transmit Power:      0
Upstream Transmit Power:         0

I appreciate any helpful insights anyone can provide, thanks.

I know 0.8mbit is normal, the problem is when I do a speed test, it's sluggish, it takes 6-8 seconds before the speed will build up to 0.8mbit, whereas the download is instant 7mbit.

I'm on an exchange, as far as the distance I can only guess according to some graph I saw which indicates your distance based on the line attenuation, according to that I am somewhere around 2km from it, also I am right on the very outskirts of the area using the exchange, the very next street over gets a cabinet.

I'm wondering if perhaps this sluggishness is affecting my gaming a bit as I get a lot of frequent lag while playing.  Also my download and upload margin is really low, 6, I've read that this can cause a lot of instability..

Ya if its a online game like world of warcraft or some online game like that. 0.8mb upload speed is not going to cut it.
i dont play any online games on my mac but if i did i would be looking for faster upload speed..
what part of nz are u in?

Its to bad FTTH doesnt kick in till 2020 cause thats the only way your going to get faster speeds
if if your less than 1KM away from your cabinet or exchange (Which your not) you could of tried VDSL2+ when it kicks in at the end of this year.

Try do this to make sure your really how far are you from the exchange <Click on Link
Go down the page a bit.
Enter your address
look for a cabinet thats named XXX/Exchange (You have to look in ADSL2+ Cabinets and VDSL2+ Cabinets)
now go on google maps and enter a road name from the center of that cabinet
Now go get directions
add your address
and look at the routes
It should say how many KM's
and that should be close guess from how far you are from the exchange.
Its not right everytime but its close.

By road its 3.8km, in a straight line I figured it to be 3km.  Assuming the center is where the exchange is located, I just zoomed right in to where the availability tool took me for my suburbs exchange.. I tried a few searches but couldn't find out where the exchanges are physically located though.  The very next street over from mine is where they start connecting via cabinet.

You must be on there cabinet..cause 3Km is way to far.
Ya it takes a while where to find the exchanges/cabinets cause telecom doesnt not list where they are.
I still think you should try get vdsl2 if you get lucky and your inzone.
What Exchange Are you on?
if your lucky and look at fiber maps most exchanges and Some Cabinets have fiber running to them so looking on a fiber map you can also take a ruff guess
EG:
I Live On Astral Pl And the map shows that im on a exchange (Pic below) It shows the Cabinet Which is named MKY/Exchange

Now looking on a fiber map on ( http://www.broadbandmap.govt.nz/map/ ) Where theres no road and the fiber running thru by G.S RD and Redoubt rd that is where a exchange is cabinet is cause looking above on that pic it is in the zone for the MKY/Exchange Cabinet so the exchange is close

Hey that broadband map is interesting to have a look at.. my street doesn't have Telecom fibre on it, but I'm just off GS Rd which does.. I'm in the Papatoetoe area.  I think I've found the exchange then, there's a place where like 3 fibre lines run into it, satelite image shows it to be a complex of some kind in the midst of a residential area, will have to do a drive by..

I suppose I can inquire about whether I can get onto a cabinet or vdsl even though the map indicates i'm only in range for the exchange.. however, I see that TelstraClear and Vector have fibre running right down my street :) Telstras plans would be a bit of a downgrade in usage or a (bad) upgrade in price though.

The Exchange is on Mawkes Ln. cause the cabinet POP/Exchange has already had a VDSL2+ upgrade cause there are 3 fiber lines running to it. The exchange must be close to there. maybe a few 100s Meters away
Service Area: POP/Exchange
Status: Completed Sep 2010
