I want to root my phone so I can install a sensible screengrabber app. But when I try to run the above installation file, I get the message, 'there is a problem parsing the package.' My phone's Application Settings is set up to allow installation of non-Market applications.

My brother has an X5 which he imported from the UK. He had no problem installing this app to root his phone. I bought my phone from 2degrees. I'm wondering if 2degrees has something installed in their phones to prevent rooting. Does anyone know?

z4root only works on 2.2 and lower. What android version is your phone running? If it's 2.3 or above z4root won't work but there are other options. Gingerbreak is one based on an exploit found in some gingerbread builds, there are a number of other solutions out there too, check out xda developers.

If your phone is running 2.2 or lower, try other root tools like super one click or universal androot. There are one or two others but I can't remember the names off the top of my head.

While your at it, slap Oxygen 2.3.1 (based on Android 2.3.7) on your phone, and install the franco kernel.
Oxygen comes pre-rooted, and has a screenshot function built in to the restart menu.

The best way about it is to:
1. install recovery
2. install Oxygen from recovery
3. install ROM Manager
4. download/install franco kernel from ROM Manager

Oxygen gives you Gingerbread and a load of tweaks, and on top of that, the franco kernel vastly improves battery life.
Well worth it in my opinion.

I have 2.2.1, so z4root should work. My brother's X5 that rooted fine with x4root is also 2.2.1.

Though Geekzone claims I am a geek, that's entirely based on a high number of discussions I had some time ago on relatively ungeeky things. I am decidedly not a geek when it comes to Android. My phone is essentially not for playing with - it is my working tool and I only decided to try rooting it with z4root because my research tells me it's z4root is the most simple and foolproof. How tricky are your suggested solutions? And do you have any suggestions for making z4root work?

Thanks for taking the trouble to make all those suggestions. It all sounds great, but I wouldn't have a clue how to do all that stuff! Not sure if I want to risk a working phone trying either.

Installed z4root on my Android 2.2 Ideos X5 a couple of weeks ago. Rooted, working well. Temporary root would not work, had to go permanent for it to work.

Fair enough. I can see where you are coming from. A working phone is always a good thing! ;-)

None of it is all that hard really, and once you have recovery installed it's even more straightforward after that.
There are guides and what not on installing the various stages, but I would be more than happy to guide you through it all if you wanted to have a crack at it.

How does taking things as far as you suggest affect the phone's warranty? I gather one of the good things about sz4root is that it can easily restore your phone to its unrooted state should you need to return the phone under warranty.

Incidentally, no one has commented on why I am getting the parsing error message when I try to install z4root, and whether there could be any way round the problem. That said, dontpanic42's solution does sound a bit tempting, particulary if there is a convenient exit from it to an unrooted 2.2.1 state if I needed to for warranty purposes.

Tried re-downloading? Could just be a bad download...

Essentially it will void your warranty, but only when it's in its customised state.
Because of the open nature of the IDEOS X5 (i.e. it is so easy to install recovery) it is extremely simple to return it back to its factory state.

I'm not sure that anyone could tell that it had a custom ROM on it when you bring it back to factory.
Maybe someone can confirm or deny that assumption?

I also have the official factory 2Degrees branded B136 ROM if you feel you need to go back to it.

I updated to Oxygen awhile back but not sure which kernel I used.
