I have a 3G iPad 2. It's running a 2degrees SIM, and most of the time it's drawing off the 2degrees network, via pre-paid "Broadband Zone Data Pack". But there are times when I'm out of the 2degrees network area so I also have a "National Data Pack", which is where I get to access mobile data off the Vodafone network.

I've configured the iPad with the carrier settings for 2degrees, and it connects and works just fine on their network.

Question 1: Presumably, when I'm out of 2degrees coverage, and I want the iPad to switch-over to Vodafone, then I need to re-configure the iPad with the carrier settings for Vodafone?

Question 2: Is there a way for the iPad to work that out automatically, and apply the right carrier settings auto-magically? Or do I have to re-set the carrier settings manually each time I move between networks?

There is no need to change settings as when you're roaming on Vodafone you're not a Vodafone customer, you're a 2degrees customer, so their settings work.

As sbiddle said the settings don't change so it will work anywhere, even overseas with the 2degrees settings.

Also you should check out where you are using National Data as they may now be under the newly built 2degrees network in Whangarei, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo, Napier, Hastings, Palmerston North, Whanganui, Dunedin and Invercargill.
Many of these areas are not official broadband zones yet, but if you have a MBB pack they will work in these areas.

I have two devices, a phone and a GPS tracker that don't switch to the vodafone network when away from 2 degrees towers. It is not an isolated incident. There must be a reason for it, but I haven't been given an answer yet, apart from being told it's because they're Chinese.

With 2D don't you have to text a code to enable off-net data? Otherwise you get none?

With 2D don't you have to text a code to enable off-net data? Otherwise you get none?

The first time you buy a broadband pack we will lock the possibility to pay 50c/MB out of canopy. But data isn't disabled, and roaming onto Vodafone is certainly still allowed. And if you have never bought a broadband pack then it isn't locked anyway.

In bought a $19 pack to try them both. Still no go. All I need is SMS from them to monitor a dementia patient. They both work on 2 degrees in most of Hamilton, but bring up message 'failed to register, Invalid Sim' If away from 2 degree towers.

Have you tried the same SIM in your phone? This would isolate the problem to the device.

Yes I have tried the sims in other phones and other sims in the devices. I have had answer service turned off. It is as though they have locked on to 2 degrees only, because they were the first sims I installed.
The phone finds Vodafone when i install a Voda sim, it shows the signal strength and says Vodafone for a second, then says 'failed to register, invalid sim'. there is no reason why the IMEI would be blocked by Vodafone.

Sometimes a Chinese product comes with the same IMEI for an entire batch, and Vodafone might be locking out devices with the same IMEI if there's one on the network already...

When you put the 2degrees SIM in a different phone does it still fail to register when you go outside of our canopy?

Do you have an option to set the network search settings to 'Automatic' on the devices and check your SMSC service centre is set to +64220227672?

AFAIK I think you can explicitly enable the data roaming from Your 2Degree control panel.

Internet is my backyard...

The sim cards work perfectly in other phones. The 2 degree shop (David) was very helpful this morning, but still no go on Vodafone.
How can I find out if the IMEI is blocked by Vodafone?
As i have said before. It gives the Vodafone option when I search, but only shows the signal strength and the 'failed to register' message when selected.

P.S. I didn't intend to hijack this thread. Hopefully the OP has his problem sorted.
