I signed up to the Orcon Genuis a few weeks back, received the Orcon Genuis Modem/Hardware. Got it set up and running and am happy with the service until issues with a Calling Card.

Before we signed up to Orcon we were on TelstraClear and used a Calling Card to make International Calls as it is much cheaper. When we tried the Calling Card on the Orcon Genuis Service in making a International Call, When I dialed the International Number that I want to call, I heard no noise for about 3-5 seconds and then hear a Engage Tone?

Have called up Orcon and told them the situation and what happens when I use the Calling Card, they told me that the Orcon Genuis uses a different type of Configuration and not all Calling Cards would work on the Service. Then went on to tell me the some calling cards from a more established company might work?

The Weird thing is that when I use the Calling Card to call my Mobile just to check if it works, it worked fine. My mobile being on the Vodafone NZ Network.

The Calling Card that I am using is called Talk 'n' Save.

Is it possible to use a Calling Card on the Orcon Genuis and if it is does anyone know which Calling Card?

Thanks in advanced for your help.

There is no guarantee that calling cards will work on all networks. It's really up to calling card companies to negotiate agreements to connect these calls - as some are not free to interconnect (and somebody has to pay for that interconnect) yet the end user expects the call to be free.

I regularly use Talk Plus to call internationally and I have an Orcon Genius.  You can find them by doing a quick search on Google.  They also use local access numbers for most areas too.

I have also used Go Talk, but gave up on that one, because when I went to try to top it up using my Credit Card (after the initial amount had expired), it just put me in one big loop trying to say it didn't recognise my card number, even though it was valid.  It's fine if you can get out to a shop to top it up, but I am happy using Talk Plus because their rates are good.

Hope this helps. Laughing

Incidentally, just a thought... if you do call internationally with a calling card and the number IS engaged, it does sometimes have a few seconds delay before you get the engaged tone.  Are you 100% sure that the card is not working?  Do you not have another international number you could try to test it out?

Not Sure, it is just weird. As at one time I tried a different international number say Number 1 which went through and I heard the ringing tone. But on a different day I tried Number 1 again and it came up with the 2-3 second no noise then a engage tone. So not sure what is going on? Unless I am getting it wrong? Mobile Call worked fine?

Thanks for your reply.

So the issue isn't calling the card platform, but making a call from the calling card IVR? If so the issue has nothing to do with Orcon.

I don't think you are getting it wrong, I think that quite possibly the phone line WAS engaged when you tried it another time, or maybe you mis-dialled the number, as (like I said) sometimes you will get a few seconds delay before the busy tone when the line actually is busy.

What I have done in the past when this happens (when I think the number really ought to have been free) is just dial direct (without a calling card) to confirm I get the same tone, immediately afterwards, but hang up before someone answers (so you don't get charged for the call).

Another thing with calling cards is that sometimes the freephone number (or local access number) you are using to access the service is actually busy itself - though this doesn't happen all that often.  If that happens, you can always check to see if there is another local access number that you could use that you wouldn't get charged for.

I think just maybe persevere with it, or possibly try the card I mentioned... Call Plus... because, like I said, that DEFINITELY works with Orcon Genius.

P.S.  Bear in mind also that the dial tones, busy tones and cut off/number not in service tones are often different in overseas countries... I have lived here eight years and still don't know the engaged tone from the cut off/number not in service tones!

One last thought, maybe try busying your mobile phone and then try calling that through your calling card from your home line.  See if the tones are the same.  (Of course if you have voicemail set up on your mobile, you would have to disable that).

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I think it will be easier to just try one of the two cards you suggested in the previous posts. I thought that Orcon was the problem that the Calling Card was not working but actually it is the Calling Card that has the problems.
