Hello!

I've just started renting a house, having come over from England, and I can't understand the setup of the TV here. There is a satellite dish mounted on the roof, and two cables coming out of the wall, which I have been told are sky cables; these do not fit into the TV, and there is no sky box or anything here. A friend advised me to purchase a digital satellite receiver, which I have done; the sky cables link into this, the freeview box is all plugged in correctly (I think), but still all I can get is a blue screen. I've tried channels 1-10 and AV1-4... Is there something I'm missing?

Thank you so much for any help, it's more than a little boring here by myself in the evenings without it!

Katie

How have you connected your new TV receiver box to your TV? What cables and what input are they plugged into?

What brand/model of TV receiver box have you purchased.

Are you sure it's a satellite TV receiver box, as NZ TV is broadcast over two delivery methods, satellite and terrestrial/land based. The satellite needs a working dish/lnb unit and the terrestrial needs a suitable UHF aerial, and is only broadcast in some areas of NZ.

so, lastly,

Where in NZ are you?

TV in New Zealand is free (Freeview) or paid (Sky, TelstraClear, Igloo).

You get Freeview with satellite (SD) or terrestrial (HD) using the appropriate set top boxes. Freview|HD is only available in some regions but growing.

Sky, TelstraClear require subscription and use their own boxes.

Igloo is not launched yet but coming soon.

If the satellite was previously used for sky, and you now have a freeview satellite box, you may need to repoint the satellite dish to the correct satellite.

you may also need to manually set the lnb frequency on the satellite box.  Common here is 11300 and 10750.  You will be able to change it in settings.
Cant say exactly as dont know what satellite box you have.   Someone will be able to help if you give the make and model of the satellite receiver you have

In short:

- where are you
- what set top box you have
- how is the set top box connected to the TV

Thank you so much for your help, turns out I was just being a spanner after all and had plugged the audio/video connections into the output port rather than one of the input ones. Oops! Oh well, I finally have TV, so I'm very happy! :)

They both use Optus D1. Dish doesn't need to be re-aimed.

Don't you have to rotate the LNB though for some dishes? I was told that sometimes a sky dish needs some adjustment to work with freeview.

In theory, it shouldn't need anything at all. In practise, a dish that has been in place for years may have to be slightly realigned due to wind / building / ground movement etc.

Thanks, that could be what they meant, especially if the dish hasn't been used for sometime it could get blown out of alignment slightly

Spanner. Love it. Haven't heard that in years. Ah. Sigh.
