It plays xvid files but not properly.
The same files play perfectly on my PC even over the
network off the same HDD. This suggests to me there is something wrong
in the X9200HD.

I looked up the keyword Codecs and found that my PC has a
divx commercial microsoft codec which plays xvid files properly but
linux uses a free open source version xvid codec which might be the
cause of the problem?
(i believe the x9200hd is based on a linuc platform?)

So i converted an avi xvid file that did not play properly to make it a mp4 and found it now played perfectly on the x9200hd. Doesn't that indicate there must be a faulty codec in the unit for playing xvid coded files?

I have hundreds of family videos which are encoded in this xvid format
and it is nice just to be able to sit and look at the kids when they
were younger. Is there anything we can do to fix this problem with the
x9200hd pvr? Otherwise is there anything else similar that works without
these problems?

I searched for a place to post this and i really hope this is the right forum :)

Note. I tried to post this the first time but it failed so if there are two posts then sorry.

HS v2.11.57

I should say i bought this unit about a year ago but had so many problems with it and was tired of being told it was not faulty and I was not reading the Manual that I put it into storage and got something else (DishTV).

A couple of weeks ago I found my original purchase receipt and saw it had come with a 2 year warranty so i got it out of storage again, confirmed all the original faults, put them in writing and handed it back to the shop. They replaced a faulty tuner (2 x satellites) and updated the firmware, told me it was all a matter of the settings being wrong, I should read the Manual, but did not address some other issues so I am really starting from scratch again and this is the first of the remaining issues.

From general searching for a solution, I am thinking it may be a codec issue where the free xvid that ships with linux might not play some video files as proficiently as the commercial microsoft vidx codec that plays the same files perfectly in Windows?

When i raised the sound sync issue with Support again, I was told to pause the video and let the sync catch up. That does work but you can't sit there doing this every 10 seconds throughout a 2 hour video. So i did a DogPile search of the internet and found other people having many of the same problems i had recorded in my list.

This Forum was one of the search results and i was about to register when I tried my old generic login details worked. I must have signed in 5 years ago although i have no memory of being here previously.

So here i am and thanks for anything you can suggest.

I suggest you have a look here at the Wiki for xvid.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xvid
You may have encoded your files in a format that is not able to be played on your X9200.
I have found this problem in the past with .avi files where some will play on a DVD player and others won't depending on the source and how they were encoded.
If you have USB and/or LAN socket on your Tv why not try playing direct to the TV.
PVR's are designed primarily for recording off air and playing back, not for playing external files. Likewise TVs which are usually very limited in what formats they will playback from USB.
Best thing to play external files is a Media Player.

It is advertised as supporting these videos.

I think it means at this time there is no better Codec available that can be installed even if purchased?

In that case I have to accept that the manufacturers of the X-9200HD PVR are not at fault but have done their best and installed the only Codec that Linux supports.

Thanks for your input.

Have you tried playing them using the DLNA function?

Run a DLNA server on your PC such as Servio and see if they play back ok on the 9200 via DLNA

Before your post I did not know what DLNA was. I saw it in the unit but there was nothing in the Manual to explain what it was so i had ignored it. Now I have googled the term and see it should solve the problem if i can make it work.
Thanks for that.
