I was recently told by a Freeview installer in Auckland that one could receive Channel 9 in Australia with a HD receiver. is that true?

Yes you can but it is a Dunedin channel. There is always a bird or some trees or grass on the screen.

Only if it's a DVB-S2 one. Definitely not with a Terrestrial one.

Plenty of threads that have discussed this lately.

Just don't expect it to last for for much longer. It's only a temporary feed.

The feed is not HD. The requirement to receive it is a DVB-S2 receiver, but as stated, this is a linking feed of CH9 and is not intended for downlink in NZ. It is leased satellite space that can disappear at any time.

Channels like these you can receive using DVBS2 receivers, alot of our customers can receive this on the satbox ultra however we do not promote the technical process on getting these channels but our boxes are possible.

Correct. fortuities signals like this come and go on D1, the last descent one was SBS 1 & 2 Tasmania. Reason we get them is that the only transponders available on D1 are Vertical Dual beam NA/NZ ones, so whilst they are service feeds for Australia, we can receive them also due to only these dual beams being available.

We do keep our customers informed of these fortuities feeds, we also make disclaimer that they can go at any time, as will be the case with the 9 feed.

there is also a bit of moderately interesting FTA stuff on IS19 at the moment also, that can be received with a dual LNBF setup on a 60cm dish, and an MPEG 4 receiver
