Hi guys

i've got a question I have an DishTV T1020 Arielbox

I've been trying to find an external 1tb hdd with external power supply to replace my failing one,

doing a search I found most hdd available now are of the "usb portable type and are powered by usb 3.0" NOT by external power supply like I have now..

so I read this on dishtv's website regarding my settop box:

"If your USB HDD does not have an external power source, we recommend you purchase an adaptor lead and power supply (plug pack) from a computer store."

I've tried in vain to find one of these adaptor via google but I dunno what im looking for

Does anyone know where to get them from? or can you post a pic of one so I got some idea of what im looking for ?

I have no clue as to what one looks like so its hard to ask a computer store for something I've never seen

also my external hdd is 12V not USB's 5V not enough to power an portable type hdd? any help would be appreciated

Okay I have found the proper name for the cable its called a USB3 Y cable

This allow you to use external 5V power

Next up is finding the right drive and for it, the portable drives don't look applealing thus far

i think you would struggle to find an externally powered 1tb Hard drive 2+tb would be the norm now, but they should work with the t1020. + gives you more space.

Yep seems like 2tb is the norm now, I have tried a 2tb drive but theres an issue with the cluster size and ntfs, the drive needs to be formatted fat32 which is ok but the cluster size is now locked on these new drives this causes the freeview box to freeze after a few seconds of recording

The older seagate drive i have now still supports to lower cluster sizes so the freeview box is happy

The cluster size is locked in at 4096 so when I format the 2tb hdd to fat32 the file system is okay but the cluster size stays at 4096 which the freeview box doesn't like

You can set a custom cluster size but I get a warning about corrupted file system if you do so, so hence abit stuck

You need a USB Y cable if you want to supply additional power to a USB device.

a powered hub might be another option to achieve the same outcome.
