I found a story on stuff back in 2016 saying Freeview were looking into DVB-S2 so channels on Satellite can go HD, also mentioned Optus D1 was approaching end-of-life as well.

Interesting.. They have just confirmed re: a post on Facebook Page 

Will need to wait official word next week when most of the TVNZ corporate are back in the office, of cause this is welcoming news to many, the content is amazing from Duke and will be a great sight seeing it in HD. The next question is Who will get HD immediate from it's launch.

I imagine if you get TVNZ 1/2 HD now, you will get TVNZ Duke HD. The exception will probably be Sky TV customers. That will probably take until the end of April to organise, which just happens to be after the Commonwealth Games. Come on Sky, surprise me otherwise :P

Intersting as Sky's contract with Optus ends 2019?

Ironical if Sky, which uses 1980's tech, goes to 100% streaming like it should be in 2018, and Duke goes to 1980's satellite!

I saw there is 0% chance of that happening. While us city dwellers can enjoy gigabit fibre (or at least xDSL), those in rural and remote communities don't get the joys of unmetered Internet, especially those outside the RBI footprint.

If they go 100% streaming then that would require all customers to have an unmetered (or very high data allowance) Internet connection. People in rural and remote communities don't have this, and probably never will. For example with RBI, 120GB will set you back $100. That's about 90 hours of HD streaming a month. If you have kids, you'd probably know that 3 hours per day between a family is definitely not enough :) Therefore I am going to assume that Sky will use satellites and STBs for the foreseeable future.
