We decided to cancel Sky as the cost is too high. We are left with Freeview, Netflix, On Demand and Lightbox. I will miss Rugby o well things might change in 2020. We did like BBC UK TV but maybe we might get some of the programs On Demand or?
I will miss pausing. In regard to recording programs, does anyone know a low priced recording device? We have a Sony Bravia TV with built in Freeview it is not a Smart TV. Cheers.

This will answer a lot of questions you might have and also help with choosing a suitable option for you to investigate.

At the end of the day, you can go complex, really complex or just similar to what you were doing with SKY. Depends on your needs.

Pickup a Tivo HD/Series 3 - they have been going second hand fairly cheap because of the Tivo NZ EPG service ending but you can get people to do a software mod and PROM chip replacement to get EPG data from the OZ Tivo community server then you have what I believe is the best recorder on the market unfortunately the newer units for sale from the likes of Panasonic are a step backwards.

Panasonics are common, but the UI is bland, some functions are slow, but they record, pause, and series link

Or you could wait 3 months and join again under a cheap promo deal or you could even sign up now provided you use a different name.

I did that once I used the name ''Rubeus Hagrid'' it was pretty cool getting a bill come out for hagrid (Hagrid is a harry potter character and was my nickname at school) So you could just do this every year it just means every year you'll have a different sky decoder and you'll have to use 2 different names for the account i.e One year you''ll call it Joe the next call it sam then back to joe (cause you only have to wait 3 months to be eligible for a new deal)

The Sky deals are over as from 28th Feb. Cheapest option is Starter, Entertainment, Sport at $80, or give up BBC etc and be $55

I (my wife) wanted a second TiVo but ended up buying 3 in one TradeMe deal. They have all been modified so I now have two for sale cheap to Geekzoners.

If you get DNS4Me or similar you can access BBC iPlayer - more quality TV on there than you'd ever find on Sky

I use DNS4Me on computer to watch over seas content. How do you set it up on a Vodafone modem so I can watch it on my smart TV?

I am in the process of letting Sky go and switching to Freeview. Bought a used Dish S8200 Recorder on Trademe and set it up. Very happy with it. It is a good replacement for MySky. Likewise, missing BBC and Vibe so will checkout DNS4ME.
FREEVIEWplus Guide isn't as easy to use, but is acceptable - main issue is the really weird sequence of channels in the guide means you have to go hunting, also the Sky App allows you to remotely record a program which you can't do with Freeview. My wife is still suffering withdrawal from the MySky remote! So I bought a new Logitech Harmony 650 remote control which replaces the ones for TV, SKY, FREEVIEW, Apple TV and Yamaha AV. Best gadget I have bought in years as it does everything it says despite my early scepticism. And the wife mastered that quick smart.

Not better, not worse, just a little different.

Stay away from Dish products as they are crap.

Panasonic is the best of a bad bunch in NZ as we are not catered to very well. You will only find 2 tuner types in NZ.

I Can't load the BBC iPlayer app on my iPad because you can only get it from the UK Apple Store. So I changed to that and my Apple ID can only download from the NZ Apple Store. Tried using VPN but Apple Location tracking foils that.

Uber Geek: what Panasonic model should I look at? My Dish S8200 is OK. At the moment! Gotta be Satellite.

You need to create a new account to do that with a different email address.

I must admit I am old school and record Freeview using NPVR and a USB UHF tuner. NPVR also gets the channel guide directly. Seems to work well and since the recorded shows live on a PC (a modest Celeron based UMPC) I can watch from any device that can see the shares including my Pi Plex client.
