hi there,

I've brought a sony tv (KDL-40W3100) back from australia with me and am wondering if there is any way I can get digital TV in NZ on it.

I managed to tune in tv3 manually but have no picture, just audio - is this the mpeg2/mpeg4 problem?

What can I do? Do I buy a set top box / buy a ps3 later in the year and sell the one I have at the moment / would it be possible to add a dvb tuner to my ps3 as an extra later (and avoid having to sell it)?

Any help/ideas appreciated,

I think your best bet would to be buy a freeview or sky box and use that (requires satilite) or freeview hd that uses just a standed uhf aerial.

The NZ FreeView DTT system uses mpeg4 for video and HD-AAC for audio, although TV3 also does AC3 hence you got sound, your Aussie inbuilt decoder will not support either mpeg4 nor AAC so out of luck. Only options is get a STB. PlayTV is to be released for the PS3 towards the end of the year. so thats an option then. The PlayTv is a USB based dongle and software that you add to a PS3.

Note FreeView comes in two formats, DTH via satellite the STBs for this are cheaper and mpeg2 based, but only SD although in 16:9. DTT is via a UHF antenna, the boxs are dearer but support HD, currently only TV3 is carrying and some HD material in 1080i, TV1/2 are transmitted in 720p although all source material is SD upscaled before transmission, they wont be carrying HD source material for a couple of months yet. All other channels on the DTT service are SD except the demo channel.

The to be release PS3 PlayTV option is DTT based, hence HD capable.

Sky is also via satellite, currently only SD but lauching HD in a few days, both Sky and the FreeView DTH service are on the same satellite (Optus D1) so can share the same dish, just split the signal if you have both Sky and FreeView DTH.
