Hello from a newbie

I am sorry if I'm repeating a topic here - I have looked through and can't see an answer to this (or not one that seems to apply to me) but if I'm wrong please redirect me!

I have just bought a Sony Bravia with built in Freeview HD. I have gone through the "digital set up" but it has only found five channels (I think what are called the Kordia ones?) - ie. Maori, Parliament, Radio NZ (x2) and Freeview HD preview channel.

I don't seem to get TV1, 2, etc etc.

I have a UHF aerial and live in Eyrewell nr Oxford (Canterbury) - have looked on freeview website and am in area for receiving and assume as I can get the channels above that I should be able to get others too.

Our analogue reception is a bit cruddy on TV1 but fine on 2, 3, C4 - can't get Prime on analogue.

Any ideas? Do I perhaps need an amplifier or something on our aerial? Have tried "manual" tuning too but it just skips through like on the auto tuning so not much help.

And are you sure you have a UHF aerial, if you do you should get many free to air UHF analog channels including CTV on channel 44 with power ouput of 44 dBW, Maori TV on channel 46 with power output of 64 dBW and Prime on channel 62 with power output of 64 dBW. If you can't get these then you probably won't get the digital channels 47, 49 and 50 (47 dBW - 50 kW).

TV2, TV3 and C4 are Band 3 VHF channels so hopefully you have a VHF aerial for these channels.

EDIT: Contact an antenna installer.

thanks for your reply.

yes with new TV we can get (not very good) signal from Maori TV and Prime on analogue - have only been able to do so with the new TV, couldn't get Prime at all previously - so am hoping that perhaps all we need is a booster or something.

will call antenna man!!! I thought I would have to, just wanted to make sure it wasn't something simple or something I was doing wrong first!

Make sure the aerial cable is going straight into your TV - not through a video recorder or anything else first.

Typically Prime is the test. Sounds like you either don't have a UHF aerial, or it's not setup/aligned/connected properly.

A booster takes what ever signal you have and amplifies it. If you have a bad signal to start with, you'll get a stronger bad signal which still may not be any good. I'd check that it is a UHF aerial, looks like a short long rod, and not a VHF, looks like a tall sail almost, lots of tall rods on it. Then check it's got good cable and good connections either end of the cable. Check it's not rusted where the cable joins the aerial etc. Check your neighbours for direction/type of their aerials in the area.

As mentioned, check first by putting cable directly and only into the new tv so it gets the full strength with nothing else like splitters/recorders etc on the way. Failing that, yeah call the aerial guy!

Thanks guys - yes I did wonder about aerial straight to TV - I did try that as I had previously got it going through my DVD recorder, but still no luck. I believe we have got a UHF aerial but it looks pretty cr**py I have to say, looks about 100 years old! It also does look pretty rusty. May have to have a new aerial but that's no bad thing.

Got the antenna man out and yes my aerial was pointing wrong way so now have all freeview channels - yay!
