Hi, i,m new to all this so sorry if this has been answered somewhere else., I have freeview on my pc and was wondering what the cpu usage should be, mine is approx 45% fot tv 1,2,3 and 25% on c4. Is this excessive? My specs are Core 2 duo e6600 cpu, gigabyte ep45-ds3r mobo, hvr3000 tv card, 9600gt graphics, western digital 500gb hardrive, 4gb ddr2 800 ram, vista home premium and i ,m using powercinema as my viewer. Thanks for any comments you have

Anywhere above 10% CPU usage would indicate your 9600GT isn't doing the work for video decoding. I don't know how hard it is to get hardware acceleration going in powercinema or if it's even possible.

If you have a graphics card with h.264 decoder support and a h.264 codec that supports hardware acceleration (e.g powerdvd 8)you would only be using 10% cpu. You got the card but looks like you dont have the h/w accel supported codec or it's not being used.

That's not entirely correct

When i was using my system with VISTA + EVR + PDVD8 + 8600GT CPU useage was about 25% with H.A. on and about 60-80% with H.A. turned off. With XP + VRM9 + HD3200 + PDVD8 i get about 0-10% CPU useage. I suspect that you don't have H.A. since your CPU is very fast. Why don't you toggle enable hardware acceleration under the MP Config -> DShow Filter settings and see if it changes?

If you turn H/W acceleration on and off and look at your usage you should easily be able to see if it's working. I wouldn't be too worried about the figure.

Strangely enough my X2 4600 sits at around 25% ish on GB-PVR on TV3 with h/w acceleration. I have had this down under 10% but after numerous reinstalls testing different cards and codecs I've ended up with this figure and full h/w acceleration.

What else do you have running in the background? That could easily be impacting on the performance.

Yeah I guess it's understandable the cpu usage varying per user as there's a number of factors involved such as operating system, graphics card, media viewer, h.264 codec, cpu, freeview channel and mayb video renderer(overlay, vmr, evr)?

I think it's clear though that you are currently not using hardware acceleration. Is their a gpu monitor for nvidia cards which you can use to determine if h/w accel is working? For ati cards there's the Catylst Control Center which has a gpu activity meter.

I have also been having issues with CPU usage for Freeview. I have the following config

AMD A64 3200+ 939, 1GB DDR333, 80GB Sata, 8400GS 256MB PCI-e, Hauppauge Nova T-500 HD, Win XP Pro

I have installed the Power DVD 8 Trial version and enable nVida Purevideo but if I go to the configuration tab is says that dxva is disabled. Is this normal. I have tried to use a patched Power Cinema 5.1, GVB and Media Portal and still get 90-100% CPU usage on channels 1 & 2.
Channels 6 & 7 seem to be between 30-60% usage.
I have also tried the CoreAVC codec and get between 80-100% CPU usage but the picture has more artifacts in is and does not play smoothly.

Will freeview work on the hardware I have. Is there something obvious that I am missing?

i am in the similar situation. i dont have many programs running in the background. only nod32, deamon tools, and the bluetooth software which enables my bluetooth keyboard. i use coreAVC for dvbt and still get 30-35% CPU usage. i am not sure if hw acceleration is working. i am on xp pro sp2.

CoreAVC does not support any H.264 hardware acceleration.

i have installed powercinema 5 and powerdvd8. but none of those are listed under h264 codec selection in mp. though its listed in directshow filters in mp config.

Hi ,thanks for your reply,s. I see in a previous post that somebody has been modifying the Power Cinema program so it will work with hardware acceleration.I have yet to try this to see if it makes a difference.I,m reinstalling my vista to see if a fresh install makes any difference and i have also had some other software issues lately so i want to install my programs one by one to see if anything else is causing problems.The only other program running when i use Power Cinema is Kapersky and the sidebar is turned on in vista.
