so, its somethign i have wondered for some time now and the only way i could do this in the past was with two dvb cards. i now see the mysky offers this in a stb which i assume has only one tuner in it. can this be done with an htpc and one tuner with freeview?
For billions of years since the outset of time, every single one of your ancestors survived, every single person on your Mum and Dads side, successfully looked after and passed onto you life. What are the chances of that like?
There are some tuner cards that have more then one tuner built into them. Also I think Media portal can record different channels from the same DVB-S card as long as the channels are on the same MUX. I dont know if any other media center software allows this however.
Media centre PC - Case Silverstone LC16M with 2 X 80mm AcoustiFan DustPROOF, MOBO Gigabyte MA785GT-UD3H, CPU AMD X2 240 under volted, RAM 4 Gig DDR3 1033, HDD 120Gig System/512Gig data, Tuners 2 X Hauppauge HVR-3000, 1 X HVR-2200, Video Palit GT 220, Sound Realtek 886A HD (onboard), Optical LiteOn DH-401S Blue-ray using TotalMedia Theatre Power Corsair VX Series, 450W ATX PSU OS Windows 7 x64
As others have said there are two ways of doing this.
The most obvious is multiple tuners. MySky for example has 4 - 3 for TV and 1 dedicated solely for PPV content. If you put multiple tuners in your PC you can do the same thing.
You can also do it with software. DVB streams are transmitted in a MUX - multiple channels all transmitted together inside a transport stream. When you watch a channel the STB/software views a single channel in this transport stream, software such as Media Portal and GB-PVR allows you to record or view all channels on a single MUX at the same time.
