Hi everyone,

I can't seem to have the PCI card see any satellite channels (and possibly any signal at all!)

I bought a WinTV HVR-3000 yesterday.  We are currently using a sky box for freeview.  The PCI card has installed without a problem and I have downloaded the latest drivers for it from the Hauppage website.

I have installed both PowerCinema and WinTV v7.  Neither can detect channels on the Optus D1 satellite (at 160.0E)

We are plugging into a Sky dish.  The sky dish appears to have two LNB from it - but I am not an expert in this at all.

PowerCinema gets to teh 'scan channels' stage and then stops at 0% and does not progress.  WinTV scans 28 channels but does not detect any.

I have tried a variety of LNB settings with WinTV but have not had any channels detected.

I have googled this and seen a whole lot of feedback.  The aerial works fine with the sky box - I can post a picture of the cable and plug into the PCI card if this woul dhelp.  It _seems_ to be screwing in and connecting well... but again, I'm not an expert in this.

Am I missing someing major here?  Any help would be very appreciated - thank you in advance.

Regards,

Pierre

I've got two different dishes here, one a Sky dish, one an ex-Sky dish, both with different LNBs. I've used my HVR-4000 with WinTV v7 with both of these. With one I needed to set the LNB settings to 11300/11300/11300, and the other needed 10750/10750/10750, so try both of those.

Are you unscrewing the cable from the 'sky box' and connecting it to your HVR-3000?
If that is the case then the lnb on the dish is probably not receiving any power to run it. The 'sky box' would be set to power the lnb under normal circumstances. If you install a splitter so that the box and hvr3000 are connected at the same time that may solve the problem.

No without a sky box the Sky dish works fine. Before I came back to sky I was doing this for over a year.

What OS are you using here?

When i first got my HVR3000 is tried the same options and had the same headaches. I would recommend trying MediaPortal if you do not have access to 7MC. It gives you a bit more feedback and i found it a lot easier to check the signal and be assured that that dish was actually connected.

I am not sure how these programs scan for channels, but remember to look with the following configured:
LNB: Try 10750 or 11300 - if it is a dual-throat LNB then you may use both in MP (with a switching frequency of 0.
Freq: Try to two main Freeview ones, 12456MHz & 12483MHz, both horizontal polarity
Symbol rate: 22500

I have set up my system with a splitter from the Sky satellite (power from sky box to dish), but i am sure i have also managed to get it to work straight form the card.

Hope this helps

Hi everyone,

Thank you very much for your replies. A few quick comments:

OS: XP with SP3 on an (old ish!) 2.8GHZ P3 (I think - I'm not in front of the PC and we'll upgrade eventually)

Sky dish - currently running to the sky box. We are looking to return the sky box and thought we'd go to a PCI card rather than a STB. Sounds like davidcole has done this successfully before!

LNB: I've tried a variety of settings with this - I will keep tabs the ones which I have tried. I have attempted a variety of combinations including 107500 and 11300, I've tried it with the 22kHz switch and an alternate satellite (from somewhere on this forum). I've definitely tried (and failed) with:
10750, 10750, 10750
10750, 0, 10750
11300, 11300, 11300
11300, 0, 11300

It sounds like I need to get Media Portal up and running. At the moment I reckon there are three possible reasons for the failure (being an Engineer and all...)

1. The card is faulty (presumably unlikely)
2. The physical connection is not working between the satellite and card
3. The software settings are pooched and it's a user based problem

I bought the card from XP computers - had a brief chat to them yesterday and they recommended staying with PowerCinema. The tech advised that he had used the 3000 with powercinema and had no problems.

I plan to do a complete uninstall and reinstall from scratch tonight so that I know what I'm dealing with. I have installed some OptusD1 patches from the Hauppage website. It seems that this problem has occurred before (I can post some links to old posts if that would help), but I can't find a straightforward resolution.

Thank you all again - media portal here we come :P

Pierre

I actually was using 'sky box' meaning any satellite set-top-box.  The point was, is the lnb powered?  I didn't realise the HVR-3000 could power the lnb itself Embarassed.

I would definitely recommend trying MP before going for the complete reinstall, it is quick to download and setup (go for the single seat option, without TV Server to keep it basic).

Also, try the LNB settings as: 10750, 0, 11300. This is what i previously have used.

RE: Powering the LNB - does the satellite dish need power? This could explain why I can't see anything, but I haven't seen anything that indicates this online.

Here is a cutout from Wikipedia:

It is possible for an LNB to physically freeze due to ice build-up in very low temperatures, obscuring the signal. This is only likely to occur when the LNB is not receiving power from the satellite receiver (i.e. no programmes are being watched). To combat this, many satellite receivers provide an option to keep the LNB powered while the receiver is on standby. In fact most LNBs are kept powered because this helps to stabilise the temperature and, thereby, the local oscillator frequency. In the case of UK BSkyB receivers, the LNB remains powered in Standby so that the receiver can receive firmware updates and Electronic Programme Guide updates.

So, it would seem they are powered when they are being used, but no nessecily needed when not.

Yes.  Done through the coax cable that runs from the STB to the dish.  There are threads on GZ that cover how it all works. But as I understand it there is an oscillator in the lnb that is used to 'tune' (for want of a better description) the lnb to the satellite transponder.

So - does the PVR-3000 supply the required power or is this why I can't see any channels (ie the LNB is not active)?  If so, do we need a STB to power the dish or are there any alternatives.

The intention was to avoid an STB and just use the computer near the TV...

Thanks,

Pierre

Based on other forums (Hauppauge UK) and the Hauppauge HVR documentation (PDF). The HVR3000 does supply power to the LNB, but may cut-out if the LNB/cable draws to much power. Therefore direct connection should work, unless you have a fault with the cabling/LNB.

Hi everyone,

I've got it working! The settings from GF74 with LNB settings as: 10750, 0, 11300 worked a treat. As simple as that :) 129 channels detected - now I have to get the playing as WinTV crashes all the time...

Cheers, and thank you all again

Pierre
