I'm a complete newbie and I could do with a little help - My current setup is:

Gigabyte MA770T-UDP3 motherboard
Phenom II X2 550 Processor
2GB DDR3 RAM
Hauppauge Nova T500 HD
8400GT Graphics
Windows XP Professional
GB PVR
Bog-standard DSE freeview ariel with clear view of Mt Fitzherbert transmitter
Panasonic 42" HD-Ready Plasma TV

I have near-perfect reception of TV1 and TV2, 3 is watchable but is a bit jittery. Prime is very jittery and will hang occasionally.

Can anyone suggest any steps to troubleshoot this poor performance?

What is happening on 3+1 and 4, these share the same MUX as 3,

Also Prime is on the same MUX as MTS and parliament et al, what is reception on those channels like

This might be a stupid question but..
If the transmitter in Fitzherbert is vertical, does that mean I have to rotate my aerial through 90' to pick up the best reception?

I also have breakups on the Korida and Mediaworks muxs from Fitzherbert. I use a Homecast DTR. The antenna isn't the best and will be getting someone to check it out. I am in Maupuia.

Vertical polarisation means that the antenna elements have to be vertical for the best reception.

Hmmm I thought the minimum video card for Freeview was an 8500gt, not an 8400gt.

And yes could be signal related.

Sorry, my mistake - I have an 8500GT.

TV3 is patchy but C4, which I believe is on the same MUX, is quiet OK.

What H.264 codec are you using? What is CPU % while watching TV3?

If you're using PowerDVD8 on some installs the H/A won't take effect until you make a registry change as it doesn't recognise the PVRX2 executable and only creates registry settings for the config application. This means H/A won't work even if enabled.

I'm running at between 25 and 35% of CPU, maybe a little less on TV1 and TV2, maybe more on TV3.

I don't know which H.264 decoder I'm using, the GB-PVR config page (Playback - Advanced Codec - H.264 Decoder) says I'm using the system default. (Alternative options are Cyberlink H.264/AVC Decode (PCM45), Arcsoft Video Decoder and PCM H.264/AVC Decoder)

When I try the various options there's no improvement and the final 2 decoders are brutal.

I'm in Chch an getting some stutters on TV3 and TV3+1 tonight. All others are sweet and never had a problem in well over a year my MP box has been running plus I havent changed any of my setup. Guessing its only the weather or some other problem unrelated to my setup.

Most people have used the H.264 decoder that comes as part of PowerDVD8.

You have obviously got a H.264 codec installed on your machine from other software (possibly the old WinTV?) but it's certainly not using the H.264 hardware acceleration if it's using 25% or more decoding TV.

Try HD PACK 2.2, it contains PDVD and arcsoft codec for hardware acceleration.
8500GT is borderline for 1080i in mediaportal, maybe in GBPVR it's ok tho.

I've tried the HD Pack with no increase in performance. I'll upgrade my graphics card to a 9400 or a 4835 and see what happens.

Maybe 8500GT is the problem, but it's possible upgrading wont fix your problem if it's caused by something else. When i did research for ATI card for HTPC (non gaming, low noise/power useage) a couple of months ago, it seemed HD4670 was the best choice.

8500GT works fine with GB-PVR, it's what I use.

The issue is more than likely what I explained above, the codec you are using is not actually taking advantage of the HW acceleration.

Make sure you select the Cyberlink H.264 codec in GB-PVR and follow the steps here to ensure the registry has hardware acceleration enabled for the PVRX2 application.
