I am just moved house and am trying to set up freeview. I have a tv with built in Freeview receiver and there is an existing Skydish on the roof from the previous owner. When I hook it up I am not picking up anything though. I figured perhaps the dish is out of line but I know the previous people had Sky working ok. What is the best approach to troubleshoot this one. I do have a satellite finder if this helps but not entirely sure how to use it.

Thanks in advance.

Your television does not have a Freeview Satellite receiver built in it has a Freeview|HD receiver built in which requires a UHF aerial and terrestrial reception to work.
For more info on the two different standards see HERE

Ahh, that makes sense. Thanks. Very much a silly question... now for the next one...

When I have the aerial plugged in, I can pick up four channels on digital input (TV1, TV2, TVNZ 6 & TVNZ 7). The reception is very very scratchy at best (i.e. unwatchable). However, does that mean I have a UHF aerial because to my mind it doesnt look like one. If it is presumably I can get on the roof and readjust to get all channels?

VHF aerial

UHF Aerial - Notice the grills on the back of the UHF aerial and also the shorter elements (parts that cross the central pole).

Yeah, thats what I thought. I've got a VHF aerial. I just thought it was strange I could get those four channels (albeit poor at best) through a digital input with the VHF aerial plugged in.

Cheers for your help.
