Posting a random question... *fingers crossed* hoping someone out there knows:

We've got a VHF aerial, 720p plasma, and I just plugged in a new freeview HD box into the flatscreen via the supplied RCA cables. All channels are noise/snow free. BUT the picture's slightly pixellated with noticeable "jaggies" - especially on diagonals and curved lines.

1. Do I need to use HDMI cables to get rid of the jaggies?
2. Do I need to change to a UHF aerial - given all channels [Prime/Maori/TVNZ 6 + 7] are coming in strong?

I'm taking it that your using a composite connection to the tv? That does produce a jaggy down scale, as you're only sending SD over composite. Component should fix it, HDMI definitely will, and HDMI will actually let you watch in HD, rather than SD with the current connection.

I'd take a guess and say your issue is possibly dot crawl, which is a limitation of composite video.

Composite is the worst possible source to use and is only delivering you a SD picture, you need to go and buy a HDMI cable which will give you HD and also elimiate the issue.

It may even be worse than this. Some of the cheap boxes have a very poor composite output, like the scaling algorithm is bung. Almost like lines are being doubled. This may be one of those boxes.

Thanks guys. Picked up a HDMI cable - it's worked wonders! Now clear, AND crisp.

Also got a UHF aerial installed as I suddenly lost Prime & Maori TV during the weekend's bad weather. Signal=49%. Quality=70%. Occasional screen/pixel freezes but no biggy. [Aerial guy said I'd need a bigger UHF aerial to get round this].

Was initially disappointed watching the TV1 news...but then saw a proper HD broadcast on TV2. Kept on screamin out to the Mrs.... "Can you SEE the whiskers on his face, the whiskers Hun!?!?!" LOL. She looked at me blankly.
