Hi All,

Just got a zinwell ZMT-620HD today(18/08/2010) from DSE

TV picture always get freeze within about 10 mins, background sound still going......

tonight even worse, pitcure freeze immediately after the box turns on......

Googled online, it's seem a lot of people having some problem, some of "lucky" guy had this problem once a week. buy to me......

the supplier next electronics Troubleshooting guide says "This is normally caused by a signal problem."

ok, but why the sony 32' LCD TV buildin freeview in other room using some UHF antenna works fine all the time?

Any solution?

damn, those freeview set top box just gets me crazy......

in fact, this is the second model i had.

firstly, i got a Sommet SHDNZ3. But i don't konw why the box is not works with freeview channel 33, everytime i select channel 33, it's tells me "channel updating, please wait......" and jump back to channel 1. After that, every channel from 3 to HD channel 100 are telling me "channel updating, please wait...." and jump back to channel 1. I have to turn off the box and turn on again to make it works. But if i select channel 33 again, problem again. I went back to DSE and get another one, same problem......

Ok, i think maybe there is a software issues with this Sommet SHDNZ3(no picture freeze at all, only not working with channel 33)

so i return the sommet one, and get a Zinwell ZMT-620HD......

Then, Zinwell one works fine with channel 33, but had a picture freeze issues

It's seem all those box has their weakness, i just can't find one that works perfect.

some people may say "maybe you signal strength is not good enough?"

I got a 32' sony KDL32EX400 LCD TV buildin review useing the same UHF antenna as the set top box, works perfect, no problems at all.

Anoher 32' LCD that buildin freeview in my mum's bedroom even just plugin with a 10 years old in door antenna (Bunny ear) still works find.

In this case, i don't think the signal is not good enough......

I can sympathize with you on that point. I too have gone through several decoders, even some of the so-called “better” brands but they all end up failing at some point. Freezing is a common theme amongst all of them.

I wouldn’t think it was that hard? Why oh why can’t someone build something that is reliable?

They don't seem to have any issues with the decoders ones built into the newer TV's , at least not in my experience, maybe someone should rip one of them out and chuck it in a separate box...they would make a fortune.

However back on topic...take it back, no doubt! although what you can get that would be any better I don't know.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

i m totally agree with you point!

why they just can't make those set top box works better? What they need to do just take out what ever they buildin those new tv, and put them into the box, that's its......

and they just can't do better......

Googled online, found same topic about the zinwell 620HD got picture freeze, was post in 2008......

two years later, problem still.......

is really that hard to resolve?

well, i will return the zinwell today, and get the Sanyo one from The warehouse, maybe this "well-konw" japanese brand set top box works better

maybe......

I assume you have tried the Zinwell box plugged into the same socket that the Sony LCD TV in the next room is using.

The only problem I have had with the Zinwell related to a poor signal (faulty aerial cable).

the sanyo is just a rebadged draco hdtv5500, much the same as the dse box is a zinwell clone. personally, after my issues with the draco i wouldn't reccomend the sanyo. there's a couple of threads on here reguarding the issues myself and others had with the draco.

It's lucky you bought the box from Dick Smith, you can just return it and get your $$$ back.

I think you need to buy another Sony TV with built in Freeview. :)

Suck it up and put together an HTPC? I've come to the similar conclusion that the boxes on sale either die early, or are feature crippled. My HT3000 box similarly froze on a few channels last week and went back to JB HiFi and had some sort of 'reset', which resolved its problem easily enough - still - WHY?

Yep, current box is an HT3000. Despite heaps of help from the distributor and a variety of software updates it is still an unreliable piece of rubbish. Going to have to reach deep and shell out a few pingers on one of them new Panasonic HD jobbies or maybe TiVo. Maybe they will be better? Unfortunately with 4 tv's in the house thats going to be very expensive!

Can anyone comment from personal experience on the HDT801s?

The poor quality of Freeview terrestrial boxes is down to the market dynamics Freeview created. They failed to broadcast a standard programming guide, with the special requirement for MHEG-5 locking mainstream devices out of the New Zealand market.

The very poor marketing Freeview has had has meant sales of Freeview terrestrial boxes have been terrible. There is little incentive for the OEM to update firmware or release an updated model of a commercial failure, especially when Freeview certification increases costs.

Without Freeview certification and with a standard programming guide available we wouldn't be seeing these problems. They adopted a system based on the one used in a country of 65 million that at the time broadcast MPEG-2 in standard definition with a standard EPG.
