Doing loads of research at the moment into satellite TV. Keep reading about approved vs unapproved sat dishes.

If I went down to noel leeming and picked up a DishTV S7070, would I be able to scan, pickup and watch more than just the freeview channels broadcasted.

Are the boxes limited / locked down to just NZ FTA channels?

My main aim is to pick up BBC World News.

If you go to the DishTV NZ website you will find out a lot of the information you require including the user manual.
I may be wrong but as it is Freeview approved it's most unlikely it will be able to tune other than Freeview channels. You most likely need to get a non-freeview certified box which will tune everything. Also if you check the Freeview Shop website you will find information on satellites, their program content and what size dish you need.

I can't speak for the S7070 exactly but its a more featured version of the S7010 which I do have.

But yes, you can get other channels. SBS1-4 came pre-programmed I think, and you're able to scan the satellites for channels (pretty much exactly like scanning VHF/UHF).

It also came with 3 other satellites programmed in (Optus C1/D3, Optus D2 & Intelsat 5) but it needs something extra to access these I believe...the two BBC channels on Intelsat 5 need a larger dish than the sky dish that was already on our house when we moved in.

I forget whether the mass of channels I can see now came preprogrammed or whether I scanned for them as we had initial issues requiring an (undocumented) LNB change and did a lot of fiddling - incl several hard resets.

I can confirm with a S7070 - you can scan SkyTV transponder and it appears to receive channels. But nothing listed in the channel list - FTA or encrypted.

it will only list the actual Freeview channels.

Time for a unapproved sat decoder.

This receiver can pick up any satellite in the region with the appropriately size dish needed to pick it up.

I got the S7070 because I wanted to pick up Channel 7's feeds, as well as other feeds from various Australian networks.

If you want to get BBC World News (and I presume you don't have Sky) and you don't know how to do it, then try Vetrun.com (it's at .net at the moment for some reason). They're helpful people and they can help out with almost anything.
