I'm on Uni break now for a while - and want to use this time to have a explore into mobile website development - and I believe Responsive is the way to go with a CMS system.

I've had a play with Wix but thats a drag drop system so not much learning if any going on - so want to be more hands on.

Have access to both Apple and Windows systems if there are software available that is only available for 1 or the other.

Any suggestions on the best way to dive into Mobile Websites - and It will be a desktop website that adjusts into mobile website if the site is accessed via a mobile platform...

Appreciate your ideas :)

just do blog + image gallery using, let's say wordpress, and make it responsive, don't just make it fluid design, make it really responsive.

If you want to get into responsive design (and you have win 8 available) I would suggest writing a Win 8 app store app using WinJS. While it is not a web application as such, it will allow you to use just about every mobile design and responsive design technique around.

Moving on from that you can also then use some of that code to make an MVC application which is a web app and can also be responsive.

btw, there is a tendency to use the word 'device' rather than mobile. Device can refer to the delivery platform (form factor), its capabilities (device caps) and modes which can be mobile, static, disconnected or a mix of all.

Instead of making a new discussion I'll ask here

A mate of mine is wanting to venture into the CMS side of things rather than mobile - and is wondering - is there any web hosting provider similar to crazydomains.co.nz that provide CMS with automatic mobile website creation? I saw WIX does so - but he's wanting something cheaper, and that allows personalised domains - and I've been looking around, theres crazy domains, web node, wix but is there any other ones? that come with good recommendations?

He's more of a click and place, drag n drop person, and wants a 1-2 page site for his hobby - and he's not keen on WIX etc due to price and also its not NZ Based (he prefers NZ based but if has to go abroad based on recommendations I'm sure I can convince him to do so)

Any suggestions?

How about WordPress.com? $13 a year to have your own domain name connected to the site, and there is probably a few responsive themes available. Not in NZ, but that shouldn't matter. Especially not if price is very important.

Firstly I don't believe they are NZ based, and it sounds like you are referring to a 'website builder' rather than a CMS. Most hosts have some form of basic website builder built into their control panel, and many are pretty basic, and the host often won't support it.
Your best solution is probably to use something opensource like wordpress. ANy other CMS system that a provider sells on a monthly basis is likely to be a software as a service solution, which you are only renting the website. eg you can never transfer the website to another provider, so you are stuck at using that host, and you may lose the website if they close down. With open source you can transfer it to any other host that has compatible servers to run the CMS.

He wants wordpress.net, the opensource one, not .com which is a software as a service version.
