Hey guys,

I am seeking advices here hoping I can have better ideas to decide my career.

Here is some info of my background:

I hold a bachelor degree in Computer Science, but unfortunately I have very least experience on Java, .NET, C#. :(
Passionate about PHP programming, hence after graduating I have been a freelance web developer, had around 20 websites built for clients so far.
Have been working at the Telco company for 4 years (customer service rep/technical support) and found the role was a bit off the IT.
Luckily since 2 years ago I shifted back into a IT field and started working as Application Support Analyst in a corporate, quite enjoy the role and company is happy to pay for my course.  I asked company to get me into MS SQL courses as I think this is more practical with my current role and aiming to become data warehousing/business intelligence specialist.

But now I am thinking whether I should bring my career back in line with what I’m most passionate about – Web development.  But on the other hand I don't have commercial/industry experience as a PHP developer, I don't have experiences on PHP framework, so I might need start it as junior developer (a bit worry about the salary)?  Or are there any programming courses I can take so I can get into an immediate or senior web developer role (a bit more than the average paid in IT industry)?

Web Developer vs Data Warehousing/BI

What is the career path like for a Web Developer (like what can I aim to be)?
Which career do you guys think will be easier to pursue in my situation?
In long term, which is the better career in NZ market (e.g. more opportunities, make more money, less stress, better work life balance etc...)?

Thanks heaps in advance.

Well I don't think there is anyway that you can get into a senior role with just training, I'm pretty sure you require quite a bit of experience hence the more pay.

If you're passionate about Web Development and are a good programmer then learning to use Frameworks should be easy for you. Frameworks can be very simple or very complex depending on your needs, and if you haven't ever used one then I would say you haven't got much experience in Web Development or you haven't been sticking to the Programming 101 rules of KISS, DRY and DRTW.
(Keep It Simple Stupid, Don't Repeat Yourself, Don't Reinvent The Wheel)

As for which career path you should take, from what I can see out in the field, the job availability for Web Development is higher but the pay is usually lower than Data Warehousing though Data Warehousing is harder to get into.

If you've built 20 websites as a freelancer I'd say you could come in at intermediate level pretty comfortably.

It's really up to you there are good jobs in both disciplines in major centres, where are you located btw?

i think there are a lot more good web developers than business intelligence people on the market, so BI is probably a good bet

however, if you're more passionate about web dev then perhaps that is the best fit - you have to enjoy what you're doing and have the passion if you really want to succeed.

Thanks for the response. I am located at Auckland. Just had a quick look at Seek, apparently there are more jobs for .Net C# developer than PHP.

Lots yep of demand for C# and Java in Auckland, I would say Ruby of Rails is getting more popular in open source shops than PHP these days.
