Hi

Nice to meet you all and merry christmas.
Sorry couldn't find a forum topic relating to training or courses... let me know if OK.
I have been looking for a course on learning .NET and using C# as a language. After googling for a while for courses in NZ, I am a little flummoxed and thought maybe people in the industry may have an idea?
Looked at ACE which seem sporadic and out-of-date (as listed on their website, maybe they don't list everything?). Another I found was softed which had an awesome sounding course, but when I called them they informed me that particular course was not available due to low demand. Surely there must be somewhere?

C# can be picked up easily if you have any experience with any 3rdgeneration programming language (e.g. Java). Back in the 2.x NET days it was frowned upon in courses unless you have a goal of MCSE certification or industry specific need to be certified due to the licensing requirements - believe this has changed obviously

If you are familiar with programming and just want to learn the language, there are web places like Microsoft Virtual Academy (free) that offer good tutorials. Also, w3scools has some good stuff on the web development side of C#.

Microsoft have made Visual Studio free - Visual Studio Community 2013 and you can also grab a copy of SQL Server Express edition if you also want to do database stuff.

If intending to study, then I suspect some of the Polytechnics might offer an appropriate course as an option to the training companies.

Do you want certification or just the ability to do things?
If you study well by yourself, maybe try the C# Yellow Book for a start. This may give you a little insight into what training courses or certification you should chase down next.
The .Net development tools, visual studio etc are all available in free, or 'express' versions, so you should be able to get a good development environment up and running easily.

Thank you all, many useful suggestions. Many good points. To summarise I am looking to enhance my career. Brumfondl got it with offering institutional training. MercI beaucoup. I am a hobbyist programmer and know many languages but want to get a career doing what I love, so need a bit of paper for employers. In other words, I do not need to learn, so much as acquire, I do understand the irony in that.
