Hi there

Sorry if this is not in the correct thread.

I'm looking for a recommended NZ website hosting service, and domain name registrar. Can anyone recommend anything?

This is for a local business site.

I've used Openhost in the past and wasn't impressed. I don't mind paying more for better service.

Thanks!

J

Hi, try our services through achieveit.nz - Domain and advanced Web hosting for $340+GST per year...

Or look at Web Drive and Site host etc..

I Use Domains4Less, never had any issues.

If you use my Quic signup you can also use the code R570394EKGIZ8 for free setup.

For domains, you can't go wrong with metaname.net. For hosting I find overseas providers to be cheaper/better. If your requirement is New Zealand one, then I had good experience with SiteHost.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that Domains4Less, Umbrellar, Web Drive and Openhost are all the same company (or use the same servers/back-end).

Yes, if I recall correctly (just a summary, I may have missed some bits out):

  • Webdrive ran the brands: Webdrive, Openhost, Domains4less, Flexihost
  • Digiweb then acquired Webdrive, and also Freeparking
  • Digiweb rebranded as Umbrellar

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

There are also probably a few other minor brands under their ownership such as hostingdirect. The market has consolidated a lot.

Sure has, the other major player who has consolidated is Voyager, who acquired Net24 (Net24 group consisted of Net24, 1st Domains, Register Direct, Expired Domains)

Why in NZ? Cloud CDN's bring response times way down for static content. Cloudflare/Amazon etc would do the trick.

Would recommend setting up a VPS on one of AWS/Rackspace/DigitalOcean/Linode (personal fave is DigitalOcean atm) and using Cloud CDN. Then either use free or paid serverpilot.io (or similar) to setup an untouched version of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS as a webserver that is security hardened and performance optimised.

Then setup maybe a CMS like Wordpress or OctoberCMS if with caching setup. Total cost $5usd / month + domain hosting.

For domain registrar (for nz domains): 1stdomains (Voyager has shown itself to be more than reliable IMO) & also Metaname would recommend

If my post helped you, consider my referrals (: Sharesies $5 referral code, Skinny 4GB buddy code, Contact Energy $100 promo code

Hey all

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like Metaname/Sitehost is a good bet.

The reason I am looking for a NZ host is because I was using an overseas host but noticed the response time when visiting the site from NZ was really slow. Visiting from the states was fine.

Perhaps there is a way around using CDN or Cloudfare?

Thanks again all!
