Hey guys,

Didn't know where exactly to post this, but i wasn't sure if there was a NZ-based forum specifically designed for chat on web design.

Trademe is great, dont get me wrong... but the fees are just going up and up and up.
TO the point of getting it worth while to pay for your own domain etc etc

Anyway im looking at starting my own e-commerce store and am looking for a shopping cart
Alot of web designers offer this for $900+ or designing the website from scratch starting from around 1800$

However i wanted to learn how to do it myself, ive already done most of the website, i just want to know if theres a free shopping cart out there which is:
1. secure
2. can use credit card (most free ones use google checkout/paypal only)
3. easy to use

BTW i want to be able to use google checkout and paypal, but NZ being NZ - simple credit card would capture most of the market as most NZ'ers aren't international e-shoppers and dont have paypal/googlecheckout

Im not sure if anyone can help me, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm may be this one needs to go to platform/development?

Well with trademe you are getting the audience, with your own site you'll have to start from scratch, there is only one thing with commerce that is free and good

oscommerce, and it's variant cre loaded

None of the open source carts are exactly secure as far as I'm aware.

OsCommerce is a good choice, it has lots of mods including various payment modules, but it needs additional php and sql mangling to make it secure and you will have to work with your host to set up properly if your running it in a shared server environment.

Default osCommerce theme is soooo ugly, but its a great bit of software - easy to use.

I was running a web store with it at one stage, and someone would place an order, and a packing slip and invoice would be emailed to me by osC, I had Outlook set to print these automatically (a rule based on sender and subject), so I would come home at end of day, pick up the pile of paper off the printer, and send the stock. Too easy.

i checked out this site and they said "os commerce - dont go there" - check it out

and hearing that it isnt secure? that gives me the creeps.... imagine if all my customers got their credit card info swiped?

that is out of the question

as for dremus thats the first ive heard of them, ill check it out... but this guy seems to thing that jshop.co.uk is the best...

however its based in the UK (as is the guy who wrote that) so i was thinking its better to get somehting NZ or AUS ? as they can give phone support?

im not sure..

anyway i checkout out PAYMATE.com and it seems pretty simple and straightforward.. they take 3% + .50c off each transaction and have a $5000 limit per month otherwise you have to upgrade the account to one with a monthly fee on top of that.

However i want to integrate paypal as well to my site?

do i just use the 2 seperate carts?

I setup an osCommerce site for one of my customers. Payment is by CC via PayPal. They have a PayPal business account setup in NZ dollars. With the PayPal IPN module for osCommerce the customer is transfered to a secure PayPal page to make the payment, then returned to your site afterwards. Works well and have not had any security issues.

i like paypal and use it all the time

how much is its fees?

hmmm just on that note - because NZ'ers are a bit behind in internet shopping (overseas anyway) wouldnt it be shooting myself in the foot?

as most nz'ers dont have paypal, and most wouldnt bother signing up purely because they are scared/ignorant?

i mean.... most tm'ers still use bank transfer - not that theres anything wrong with it! its free and fast

does that cart accept normall CC as well?

You can pay with a CC (Visa,MC,Amex,Discover), in NZ Dollars, without even having a PayPal account.

Transaction Fees

1.9% to 2.9% + $0.30 USD

if you are worried about looks may be you can go the joomla way, and have plugins/extensions for carts, here is the list.

great how you dont have to sign up with paypal, but you use their secure gateway

so whats the difference between this cart and the paypal cart? as i understand there is one

and about layout - do you design the layout yourself? and then just add html for the "add to cart" "checkout" icons etc?

how does it integrate to the website?

osCommerce controls the layout, you just customise with your own logos, colour schemes etc.

You dont have much control over the look of the PayPal payment screen tho, however they only see a page or two of that.
